The current telecommunication infrastructure cannot support the future bandwidth requirements of consumers. The application of optical amplifier technology in fiber-optic networks is demonstrated and analysis is performed on methods that can help meet the need for ever-increasing bandwidth in optical telecommunications while contributing to lower network operating costs in both the local and long-haul domains. Systems engineering methods are used to analyze the need for increased bandwidth and to delineate costs associated with operating a fiber-optic network using current technology involving the application of regenerative repeaters spaced periodically over a given communications link. This is contrasted with estimated recurring costs of operating a fiber-optic link applying fiber-optic amplifier technology. Possible architectures and problems associated with providing integrated broadband services to consumers is also analyzed.en
