Faster Fast Food

Abstract

This case study examines the transformation of the U.S. fast food industry through AI and robotics, focusing on a Virginia Tech startup, FeedMeAI, and its prototype for a fully automated Chick-fil-A restaurant. Confronted with labor shortages, wage pressures, and high turnover, fast food franchises are seeking efficiency through automation. FeedMeAI’s system reimagines the entire restaurant infrastructure—from raw goods delivery to customer service—enabling drastic reductions in labor and operational costs. While automation improves speed, consistency, and cleanliness, the case surfaces deeper concerns about job displacement, class inequality, corporate accountability, and the dehumanization of food service. Chick-fil-A, known for its strong human-centered brand culture, hesitates to adopt full automation, fearing it may undermine its customer experience and community engagement. This case invites debate over the ethics of replacing low-wage labor with AI, the responsibility of corporations to human workers, and the broader implications for labor markets and social cohesion as industries embrace automated futures.
