dc.description.abstractDr. Jon Clardy Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, Harvard Medical School, Harvard University All animals, including humans, originated and evolved on a planet already teeming with bacteria, and the two kingdoms of life have been competing and cooperating through their joint history. Although bacteria are most familiar as pathogens, some bacteria produce small molecules that are essential for the biology of animals and other eukaryotes. This lecture explores some of these roles and the small molecule chemistry that underlies them.en
dc.description.notesThe Virginia Tech Life Science Seminar Series is in full swing this semester, with renowned scientists from across the world visiting campus to speak on diverse topics, including infectious diseases, cancer biology, plant sciences, and genomics. Launched more than 10 years ago, the series is funded by the Fralin Life Science Institute, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute. Seminars occur every Friday, from 12:20 p.m. to 1:20 p.m., in the Virginia Bioinformatics Institute conference room.en
