Abstract
Food security can be examined by analyzing the links between soil resources and society. Declining tropical crop yields can be linked to loss of soil quality. Smallholder farmers in the tropics need to be able to access the resources to maintain soil quality. Measures farmers can take to decrease erosion and promote soil fertility include management techniques such as crop residues, green manures, and alley cropping.
