This paper examines the situation of agricultural development in African countries, specifically cases in Ghana, Sudan, Uganda, Zambia, and South Africa. The author asserts that inadequate institutional support and a lack of farmer involvement have contributed to low levels of improved technologies and technology adoption among small-scale farmers. The author also cites structural constraints and the process of agricultural development as significant components to consider in affecting the motivations and interactions of the groups involved. It is suggested that development programs will not be successful or meaningful to farmers until their knowledge, practices, and socio-economic positions are addressed.en
