Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, and Freedom Day is celebrated in commemoration of the end of slavery in Texas. Although the Civil War ended in April of 1865 the Confederate troops in Texas continued to fight until mid-May. The end of slavery was proclaimed by Major General Gordan Granger in the state of Texas on June 19, 1865. Local activists are finding ways to celebrate African Americans in ways that visitors can connect with its rich history.en
