Home gardens: Treasure troves of diversity

Abstract

Home gardens are agro-ecosystems located close to the area that serves as a permanent or temporary residence. In addition to contributing to household food security, home gardens are important sites for conserving plant genetic resources and maintaining biodiversity. The plants and animals that make up the home garden provide sustenance, economic income, as well as cultural importance. Traditionally, women are the cultivators of the small home gardens, as they play the caretakers and providers of food for the family.
