The Development of Software Engineers: A View From a User

Like many organizations, the Naval Surface Weapons Center (NSWC) has recognized a tremendous growth in the use of computing resources. How NSWC focused attention on the crucial role of software development technology and devised a plan for dealing with the scarcity of competent software development personnel is the subject of this paper. The necessary knowledge areas for software engineering are identified in discussing the academic requirements and some conclusions arrived at during the deliberations are mentioned.
