Abstract

Grasslands are dynamic terrestrial ecosystems dominated by herbaceous and shrub vegetation maintained by fire, grazing, and drought and/or freezing conditions which have provided goods and services to support flora, fauna, and human populations around the world for centuries. However, we are still asking these fundamental questions: What is the condition of the world's grasslands? Can grassland ecosystems maintain their current supply of goods and services? The lack of agreement on the definitions of their conditions and what constitutes "healthy" grassland ecosystems has demonstrated to the world that there is no easy answer. These issues and concurrent lack of global indicators has led to the Pilot Analysis of Global Ecosystems (PAGE).
