Abstract

A state-and-transition model constructed for the condition of rangelands in southern Mali indicated that the present land use, characterized by increased cropping, uncontrolled burning and heavy grazing, and timber and fuelwood collection, leads to serious environmental degradation. It is considered that regeneration would require reduced exploitation, controlled burning and in the worst cases water and soil conservation measures. A change in land use was considered necessary to achieve sustainable rangeland production. Separate areas for fuelwood production and fruit trees are recommended. (CAB Abstracts)
