Abstract

The Small Scale Seed Production Training Program is an outcomes-based training program to support seed security in rural Southern Africa. The program manual contains eight training modules designed for use in institutions of higher learning, agricultural extension programs, development projects, and seed companies developing small scale out-grower seed schemes. Training modules include: seed security and its role in food security; forming gender-balanced farmer groups for seed production; identifying improved crop varieties in farmer implemented observation trials; assisting farmers to produce optimum quantities of quality seed through use of appropriate agronomic practices; facilitating maintenance of pure crop varieties by small-scale farmers; assisting farmers to produce and market seed within existing laws and regulations; facilitating seed networks, exposure visits, and seed marketing; and facilitating trainers to produce a programme plan for seed production by small-scale farmers.
