Traditional pastoral production systems around the world have shared characteristics related to livestock management (e.g. herded livestock), production strategies (e.g. mixed herds), and socio-economic factors (e.g. resource tenure). These similarities are considered to be too great to be coincidental and may represent common responses to production constraints and opportunities on rangelands. It is suggested that by understanding the rationale behind these common adaptations more sustainable livestock production systems may be designed for such conditions. (CAB Abstracts)en
