Abstract

A Ugandan national conservation trust fund (ECOTRUST) started the "Trees for Global Benefits Program" pilot study in Uganda in 2004. The goals were to support small landholders in planting native trees for carbon sequestration. The program is paying participants US$8 per ton for carbon sequestration, with payments being made through the carbon broker Bioclimatic Research and Development (BR&D) and ECOTRUST. While still in the pilot stage, the project has made payments to 100 farmers.
