- Even More Potential to Serve: Florida’s Minority Serving InstitutionsBoland, William C. (The Center for Minority Serving Institutions at the University of Pennsylvania, 2018-07-01)Few states reflect the changing demographic face of the United States more than Florida. The Sunshine State exists as a tropical oasis for the hundreds of thousands of tourists frequenting its beaches and natural environment each year. It is also home to a growing multiplicity of people of varying races and ethnicities speaking dozens of different languages. The shifting demographics are reshaping enrollment in Florida’s education system, including its postsecondary institutions. Given the increase in students of color attending the state’s colleges and universities, the number of Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) has also continued to increase. This report provides a portrait of MSIs in all higher education sectors in Florida. The authors use longitudinal data to analyze enrollment, financial indicators, student financial aid, and institutional completion measures.
- Investing In Student Success: The Return On Investment Of Minority Serving InstitutionsGasman, Marybeth; Castro Samayoa, Andres; Boland, William C.; Washington, Amanda; Jimenez, Chris D.; Esmieu, Paola 'Lola' (The Center for Minority Serving Institutions at the University of Pennsylvania, 2016-05-01)Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) educate 20 percent of the nation’s college students, including large percentages of first generation and low-income students as well as students of color (NCES, 2015). However, these institutions—including Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs), and Asian American & Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs)—are often excluded from national conversations regarding increasing college opportunity and maligned by media, scholars, and policymakers as making only marginal contributions. One reason MSIs are overlooked is because there is little research on their return on investment (ROI). In order to spur conversation about MSIs and ROI, the Penn Center for Minority Serving Institutions and Educational Testing Service commissioned four new, empirical research papers by leading scholars in higher education. This report share executive summaries of the papers as well as links to the full papers.
- An Unstoppable Tidal Wave of Progress: Minority Serving Institutions in TexasBoland, William C. (The Center for Minority Serving Institutions at the University of Pennsylvania, 2017-02-01)Texas represents many characteristics of the United States: its rebel spirit, its multicultural future, and its fear of that future. Texas is a majority-minority state with deep roots in Native American, Spanish, and Mexican cultures. But Texas is also a state comprised of many who support the construction of a metaphorical and physical wall to barricade the country from an unstoppable tidal wave of progress. The pain caused by these dislocations and the implications for politics and policymaking are clearly seen in Texas. Its lawmakers look to higher education to address and correct the economic and workforce changes that will continue to reshape the Texas (and United States) of tomorrow. This report examines the Minority Serving Institutions located in Texas as well as the political, economic, and demographic landscape of the state using the latest data available.
