- Bloom and DoomLi, Jiale (Virginia Tech, 2024-05-24)This thesis harnesses 3D modeling to present a contrasting world through Maya 3D models, Substance Painter textures, and Adobe's audio-visual editing tools. Influenced by my childhood experiences and cultural history, the project contrasts the natural environment with a polluted, urban landscape. The paper also discusses future expansions aiming to enhance interactivity and deepening the narrative on human environmental impact.

- Darśan - Dance for KriśnaPilania, Harshal (Virginia Tech, 2024-06-25)Darśana is an an interactive, multi-channel installation offering participants an artistic, somatic immersion in Hindu mythology. The exhibit interprets the Hindu concept of 'darśana'—a practice involving the experience and observance of a deity—through a contemporary lens. At the heart of the installation is Lord Kṛṣṇa, the beloved flutist deity celebrated for his wisdom and charm. Participants are immersed in a digital rendition of his native forested land, Vṛndāvana. Here, they are encouraged to move, dance, and interact with their surroundings. By presenting ancient stories through new media technologies, "Darśana" explores the potential of modern technology to reinterpret and revitalize traditional practices and beliefs for contemporary audiences, drawing their attention to their cultural heritage.

- The Joys of GardeningShah, Jasmine Rajesh (Virginia Tech, 2021-12-09)The Joys of Gardening is a virtual experience in which the viewers are invited to roam and explore a garden maze scattered with features including a greenhouse, a fountain, a gazebo, and a variety of personal gardening videos. One of the main attractions includes an opportunity to interact with a tomato plant and observe different stages of its growth. These elements combined are essential to the piece's purpose: to spread the passion and joys of gardening. There are many therapeutic effects to gardening such as: the sun helps people be happy, working with the soil allows a sense of giving life, and watching a plant grow can inspire the joy of gardening and the joy of discovery. As the viewer inhabits the space, they are engulfed into a world of butterflies, birds chirping, and serene lighting. This experience has a set aesthetic, narrative, and user interaction. By utilizing these elements, they are able to enjoy a relaxing stroll through the maze. This paper will discuss the influence behind the experience, stylistic choices, and user interactions. This experience continues to explore the potentials of blending the physical landscape and the digital landscape.
- Light Year 47: Tales of Diverted RealityDrum, Meredith (2019-03-07)LIGHT YEAR 47: TALES OF DIVERTED REALITY {MARCH 7, 2019} Curated by: Peter Fulop & Brigitta Veradi Participating Artists (all artists are former artists in residence of ChaNorth): Chen Wang, James Hopkins & Tori Carr, Meredith Drum, Jonathan Sims, and Marisa Adesman & Christian Berman Tales of Diverted Reality is a collection of short stories exploring perceptions of reality from ancient to contemporary, from the individual point of view. Tales can estrange the reader, in this case the viewer from the real world & allows him or her to deal with deep-rooted psychological problems and anxiety provoking incidents to achieve anatomy. Tales of Diverted Reality jumps between circling endlessly around a candy colored amusement park, the vastness of Las Vegas and the authenticity within its deception, consumer driven visual culture that dominates many commercial worlds created with 3D computer software, visual invocation of a spell formula from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, and a feminist re-adaptation of the Bluebeard fairytale.
- Loci: Creative AR Visualization of Overlooked Narratives in Familiar SpacesOkoro, Joshua Oghenekevwe (Virginia Tech, 2024-06-25)This thesis explores the use of location-based augmented reality to transform our perception of the built environment. In the artwork, the historic Armory building in the Town of Blacksburg which serves as home to the School of Visual Arts (SOVA) at Virginia Tech is used as a locus of changing functions, social impact, and evolution. In this case, its history is used to creatively visualize the overlooked narrative in familiar spaces through augmented reality (AR) murals. AR is an artistic medium that unveils rich hidden histories, sparks conversation, and promotes deeper connection between people and places. I drew inspiration from contemporary artists such as Brian Peterson, the social narrative of the WPA mural initiative, and Kandinsky's vibrant abstract work. The project utilizes Google's ARCore framework in the Unity game engine as well as Google's Geospatial API with the aim to creatively reveal hidden narratives in places and promote positive social engagements.

The program includes nine short videos made from 2005 to today by the artist addressing issues such as the environment and global warming, feminism, anthropology, and the history of cinema, with particular attention towards endangered species and cultures.
- The Story Art and TechChung, Youn Hee (Virginia Tech, 2023-07-27)The Story Art and Tech merges storytelling and technology together to elucidate the animated filmmaking process for readers who are interested in animation. The author's path to animation director is traced from beginning to end starting with writing ideas and moving on to forming storyboards and animatics to completing animations for the screen. Two 3D short animated films and three storyboards with animatics are presented. A storyboard primarily shows the audience the thought process of storytelling; it previsualizes a script or an idea. It is then narrated into moving images called animatics; a preliminary version of a film. Animatics are important references for animators to animate shots and characters. Eventually the rest of the animation pipeline makes it into a final product: an animated film. As an artist who writes stories and animates them with 3D technology, presenting how a storyboard is made into an animated film is the most immediate way to inform the audience of this process with entertaining stories. In this paper, an extended discussion of the author's creative thought and development processes are presented with two distinct parts: storytelling and technology.
