- Conflict management trainingGoebel, J.; Ampagoomian, C.; Touré, A. (Wallingford, Oxon; Cambridge, Mass.: CABI Publishing, 2005)In chapter 8, Goebel et al. provide an overview of an alternative conflict management approach and discuss how it differs from common approaches to conflict resolution. The approach is based on building conflict management and consensus building skills rather than simple conflict management, per se. The training program consists of a series of workshops focused on building skills and empowering local leaders by their learning a sustainable process for facilitation and management of diverse conflict situations. This process has been central to the evolution of the NRMAC from a group of village representatives to a committee with a Commune-level mission to improve NRM in the face of resource competition.

- From conflict to consensus: A catalyst for healthy human, economic and ecologic conditionsGoebel, J. (2001)Conflict resolution skills are taught to various participants of the SANREM/CRSPs Phase II program in Mali, West Africa. The premise of introducing these skills to participants is that unresolved conflict robs communities and institutions of vitality and opportunities to make rapid progress toward important goals and objectives. Appropriate conflict resolving processes can lead to consensual decisions of all involved parties, yielding behavior that is consistent with those agreements. This paper describes the methodology and consequences for bringing together the various stakeholders in the management of the bourgoutières, important riparian areas.

The first half of this manual describes the basic process used in a series of workshops facilitated for the Madiama Commune from October 1999 to October 2002. A more complete accounting of these individual workshops is found on the website: www.aboutlistening.com under "Stories." The second part of this manual provides a more comprehensive understanding of the basic elements of conflict resolution and is translated to French. The facilitator may use this process in diverse ways to fit the situation. Applications will depend on the group.
