- Abstraction of the VillaWohlstetter, Andrew Michael (Virginia Tech, 2023-07-27)This thesis is an investigation and analysis of a classical typology, the Villa, aided by extensive travel and research. The project begins to identify a new found set of guidelines of proportion, planes, points, and the space in between them to understand the forms in which a Villa can take within its landscape. An understanding of the wealth and opulence required to live in one of these Villas broaches the way we begin to think about the amounts of space required to live. A purely hand drawn and produced set of drawings were produced, punctuating deliberate choices in construction and landscape. These abstractions are then brought to fruition through model and painting, breathing life into the ideas that are displayed.
- Drawing Out NotationsByrne, Conor Vincent (Virginia Tech, 2019-04-04)This work finds curious the relationships of figures bound by and revolving around a central axis. As this series of figures are elaborated by mathematical operations, the complex nature of their combination removes apparent identity and synthesizes a simultaneous presence which is difficult to name. The drawings serve as a form of notation, similar to sheet music. As notation they aim to find their voice in the physical world. The drawings search for relationships which are then made tangible so they can be studied in light and act as a model to continue working.
- Framing Impressions: Image, Drawing, and CollageRojiani, Rehanna B. (Virginia Tech, 2011-09-23)The architectural image acts towards two primary objectives; to represent what is there and to make present what is not. This differentiation between the two constitutes a frame in which what is not present can appear. Images considered as such allow for the exploration of the formal questions of place, questions that address both longing and belonging and one's belief that something can and should take place. Through photography, drawing, and collage, the project considers the nature of a room with a view in relation to the house and the field.
- From process to criteriaMartin, Shelley F. (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, 1987)This house is not in Ticino. It is somewhere between earth and sky, in the country, or in the city, passing the suburbs altogether at a speed of 45 mph. This house does not have a television set, hence the dweller never sees the architect portrayed in deodorant commercials, soap operas, nor shoe advertisements.
- Hallway, HouseLanni, Katherine Elizabeth (Virginia Tech, 2013-06-04)This project uses the program of a house on Claytor Lake as a vehicle for exploring the role of turning in protecting and uniting adjacent spaces. Drawing was the primary means for this process of exploration, and can be read wholly and without the support of related text. Figures at various scales -- from column to tree, resident to house -- both inhabit and articulate the project. This house celebrates the preeminence of the hallway, and emphasizes its authority with the presence of subordinate figures and an agonistic landscape.
- HorizonCarr, Masie Rose (Virginia Tech, 2018-06-14)the Horizon separates the ground, sky the inhabitable space, space the separation of opposites the Horizon exists where opposites meet the contradiction emphasizes the existence of the Horizon architectural elements emphasize this place of meeting using elements of repetition, reflection, and separation
- In search of voices: questions, comments, and opinions on architecture and design in late 20th century AmericaMays, Vernon L. (Virginia Tech, 1997)Through a series of examinations of new and renovated buildings, interviews with architects, clients, and planners, and studies of design-related issues at a wide range of scales, the author seeks to develop a critical voice through which to contribute significantly to public and professional discussions of design across the nation.
- Instruments of Memory: The Architect as ArchivistSmith, Liam Arthur (Virginia Tech, 2014-02-03)The mental space in which the architect formulates, tests, and cultivates an idea is deformed by memory, so that nothing projected into this space is bereft of association. However, neither is this space constrained by physical reality, allowing the architect a certain freedom to visualize the totality of an object and the world in which it is projected, simultaneously and in suspension: a space between memory and imagination. Memories and experiences layer richness upon this inner world and form the context for its manifestation; its realization. The deliberate and conscientious curation of this inner world-- the architect as archivist of memory and experience-- is an essential practice for the development of the architect and the worlds in which they operate.
- Interpreting the Landscape through Layers of MappingMcmillon, John Bernard (Virginia Tech, 2017-06-23)The ways in which landscapes are represented, through maps, paintings, and photographs, influence the interpretation of a particular site. By investigating these different methods of representation, the landscape can be understood on a deeper level. Layering these various maps and images creates a variety of diagrams that can then be used to determine what are the most important qualities and how to utilize these qualities in an architectural intervention.
- Lost Fragments: A Therapy Center to cope with grief in Richmond, VirginiaShah, Drishti Rajesh (Virginia Tech, 2019-06-27)An exploration began to understand the relationship between architecture and human emotion. Inspired by a personal story of loss, this thesis began to disseminate the five stages of the Elizabeth Kübler Ross model of grief. Each of the stages was studied in depth to find architectural elements that relate to every stage. Furthermore, the elements helped establish a mood and quality of the spaces that were directly associated with program, light, and material. As the project began to evolve, a series of questions of architectural sequence, material practices, and placemaking followed and with every step, a decision was to be made. This constant decision-making was influenced by sets of conditions and contexts resulting in a methodology specific to a particular site. This thesis presents a case to look at architecture through a qualitative design process. It endeavors to define and explore elements of architecture to create an experience, that has impact on human emotion.
- Stair Column TowerBranch, L. Nikole (Virginia Tech, 2013-08-27)This set of drawings, paintings, and photographs explores the realms of knowledge and experience in architecture through analytical and perceptual means. In other words, how physical, material considerations inform the experience of moving through space, the perception of space, and the memory of place. These themes and questions are considered through the design of an observation tower that punctuates the ambiguous joint between land and water, earth and sky on the southwestern most point on the Isle of Skye, Scotland, UK.
- Thermal Baths in Isfahan in pursuit of a beautiful silence in the heart of traditionGhafouri Ashtiany, Hadyeh (Virginia Tech, 2014-12-16)what follows is a relatively concise attempt at designing a place that would contain spaces of quietude, solitude and interaction through architectural qualities such as light and shadow, mass and void along with materials and layering. enjoyable and relaxing spaces that would last in one's memory. Hoping that these qualities would engrave a beautiful mark on one's soul even when they are no longer at that place. a complex of thermal baths in the city of isfahan, iran, a city rich in culture, made this exploration of mine pursuable and possible.
