- Accelerating a Coupled SPH-FEM Solver through Heterogeneous Computing for use in Fluid-Structure Interaction ProblemsGilbert, John Nicholas (Virginia Tech, 2015-06-08)This work presents a partitioned approach to simulating free-surface flow interaction with hyper-elastic structures in which a smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) solver is coupled with a finite-element (FEM) solver. SPH is a mesh-free, Lagrangian numerical technique frequently employed to study physical phenomena involving large deformations, such as fragmentation or breaking waves. As a mesh-free Lagrangian method, SPH makes an attractive alternative to traditional grid-based methods for modeling free-surface flows and/or problems with rapid deformations where frequent re-meshing and additional free-surface tracking algorithms are non-trivial. This work continues and extends the earlier coupled 2D SPH-FEM approach of Yang et al. [1,2] by linking a double-precision GPU implementation of a 3D weakly compressible SPH formulation [3] with the open source finite element software Code_Aster [4]. Using this approach, the fluid domain is evolved on the GPU, while the CPU updates the structural domain. Finally, the partitioned solutions are coupled using a traditional staggered algorithm.
- Accelerating Structural Design and Optimization using Machine LearningSingh, Karanpreet (Virginia Tech, 2020-01-13)Machine learning techniques promise to greatly accelerate structural design and optimization. In this thesis, deep learning and active learning techniques are applied to different non-convex structural optimization problems. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) based standard optimization methods for aircraft panels with bio-inspired curvilinear stiffeners are computationally expensive. The main reason for employing many of these standard optimization methods is the ease of their integration with FEA. However, each optimization requires multiple computationally expensive FEA evaluations, making their use impractical at times. To accelerate optimization, the use of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) is proposed to approximate the FEA buckling response. The results show that DNNs obtained an accuracy of 95% for evaluating the buckling load. The DNN accelerated the optimization by a factor of nearly 200. The presented work demonstrates the potential of DNN-based machine learning algorithms for accelerating the optimization of bio-inspired curvilinearly stiffened panels. But, the approach could have disadvantages for being only specific to similar structural design problems, and requiring large datasets for DNNs training. An adaptive machine learning technique called active learning is used in this thesis to accelerate the evolutionary optimization of complex structures. The active learner helps the Genetic Algorithms (GA) by predicting if the possible design is going to satisfy the required constraints or not. The approach does not need a trained surrogate model prior to the optimization. The active learner adaptively improve its own accuracy during the optimization for saving the required number of FEA evaluations. The results show that the approach has the potential to reduce the total required FEA evaluations by more than 50%. Lastly, the machine learning is used to make recommendations for modeling choices while analyzing a structure using FEA. The decisions about the selection of appropriate modeling techniques are usually based on an analyst's judgement based upon their knowledge and intuition from past experience. The machine learning-based approach provides recommendations within seconds, thus, saving significant computational resources for making accurate design choices.
- Advanced Linear Model Predictive Control For Helicopter Shipboard ManeuversGreer, William Bryce (Virginia Tech, 2019-10-22)This dissertation focuses on implementing and analyzing advanced methods of model predictive control to control helicopters into stable flight near a ship and perform a soft touchdown from that state. A shrinking horizon model predictive control method is presented which can target specific states at specific times and take into account several important factors during landing. This controller is then used in simulation to perform a touchdown maneuver on a ship for a helicopter by targeting a landed state at a specific time. Increasing levels of fidelity are considered in the simulations. Computational power required reduces the closer the helicopter starts to the landing pad. An infinite horizon model predictive controller which allows simultaneous cost on state tracking, control energy, and control rates and allows tracking of an arbitrary equilibrium to infinity is then presented. It is applied in simulation to control a helicopter initially in a random flight condition far from a ship to slowly transition to stable flight near the ship, holding an arbitrary rough position relative to the ship indefinitely at the end. Three different target positions are simulated. This infinite horizon control method can be used to prepare for landing procedures that desire starting with the helicopter in some specific position in close proximity to the landing pad, such as the finite horizon method of landing control described previously which should start with the helicopter close to the ship to reduce computation power required. A method of constructing a landing envelope is then presented and used to construct a landing envelope for the finite horizon landing controller. A pre-existing method of combining linear controllers to account for nonlinearity is then slightly modified and used on implementations of the finite horizon landing controller to make a control that takes into account some of the nonlinearity of the problem. This control is tested in simulation.
- Aerodynamic Modeling in Nonlinear Regions, including Stall Spins, for Fixed-Wing Unmanned Aircraft from Experimental Flight DataGresham, James Louis (Virginia Tech, 2022-06-28)With the proliferation of unmanned aircraft designed for national security and commercial purposes, opportunities exist to create high-fidelity aerodynamic models with flight test techniques developed specifically for remotely piloted aircraft. Then, highly maneuverable unmanned aircraft can be employed to their greatest potential in a safe manner using advanced control laws. In this dissertation, novel techniques are used to identify nonlinear, coupled, aerodynamic models for fixed-wing, unmanned aircraft from flight test data alone. Included are quasi-steady and unsteady nominal flight models, aero-propulsive models, and spinning flight models. A novel flight test technique for unmanned aircraft, excitation with remote uncorrelated pilot inputs, is developed for use in nominal and nonlinear flight regimes. Orthogonal phase-optimized multisine excitation signals are also used as inputs while collecting gliding, aero-propulsive, and spinning flight data. A novel vector decomposition of explanatory variables leads to an elegant model structure for stall spin flight data analysis and spin aerodynamic modeling. Results for each model developed show good agreement between model predictions and validation flight data. Two novel applications of aerodynamic modeling are discussed including energy-based nonlinear directional control and a spin flight path control law for use as a flight termination system. Experimental and simulation results from these applications demonstrate the utility of high-fidelity models developed from flight data.
- Aerodynamic Uncertainty Quantification and Estimation of Uncertainty Quantified Performance of Unmanned Aircraft Using Non-Deterministic SimulationsHale II, Lawrence Edmond (Virginia Tech, 2017-01-24)This dissertation addresses model form uncertainty quantification, non-deterministic simulations, and sensitivity analysis of the results of these simulations, with a focus on application to analysis of unmanned aircraft systems. The model form uncertainty quantification utilizes equation error to estimate the error between an identified model and flight test results. The errors are then related to aircraft states, and prediction intervals are calculated. This method for model form uncertainty quantification results in uncertainty bounds that vary with the aircraft state, narrower where consistent information has been collected and wider where data are not available. Non-deterministic simulations can then be performed to provide uncertainty quantified estimates of the system performance. The model form uncertainties could be time varying, so multiple sampling methods were considered. The two methods utilized were a fixed uncertainty level and a rate bounded variation in the uncertainty level. For analysis using fixed uncertainty level, the corner points of the model form uncertainty were sampled, providing reduced computational time. The second model better represents the uncertainty but requires significantly more simulations to sample the uncertainty. The uncertainty quantified performance estimates are compared to estimates based on flight tests to check the accuracy of the results. Sensitivity analysis is performed on the uncertainty quantified performance estimates to provide information on which of the model form uncertainties contribute most to the uncertainty in the performance estimates. The proposed method uses the results from the fixed uncertainty level analysis that utilizes the corner points of the model form uncertainties. The sensitivity of each parameter is estimated based on corner values of all the other uncertain parameters. This results in a range of possible sensitivities for each parameter dependent on the true value of the other parameters.
- Aeroelastic Analysis of Membrane WingsBanerjee, Soumitra Pinak (Virginia Tech, 2007-08-22)The physics of flapping is very important in the design of MAVs. As MAVs cannot have an engine that produces the amount of thrust required for forward flight, and yet be light weight, harnessing thrust and lift from flapping is imperative for its design and development. In this thesis, aerodynamics of pitch and plunge are simulated using a 3-D, free wake, vortex lattice method (VLM), and structural characteristics of the wing are simulated as a membrane supported by a rigid frame. The aerodynamics is validated by comparing the results from the VLM model for constant angle of attack flight, pitching flight and plunging flight with analytical results, existing 2-D VLM and a doublet lattice method. The aeroelasticity is studied by varying parameters affecting the flow as well as parameters affecting the structure. The parametric studies are performed for cases of constant angle of attack, plunge and, pitch and plunge. The response of the aeroelastic model to the changes in the parameters are analyzed and documented. The results show that the aerodynamic loads increase for increased deformation, and vice-versa. For a wing with rigid boundaries supporting a membranous structure with a step change in angle of attack, the membrane oscillates about the steady state deformation and influence the loads. For prescribed oscillations in pitch and plunge, the membrane deformations and loads transition into a periodic steady state.
- Aeroelastic Analysis of Truss-Braced Wing Aircraft: Applications for Multidisciplinary Design OptimizationMallik, Wrik (Virginia Tech, 2016-06-28)This study highlights the aeroelastic behavior of very flexible truss-braced wing (TBW) aircraft designs obtained through a multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) framework. Several improvements to previous analysis methods were developed and validated. Firstly, a flutter constraint was developed and the effects of the constraint on the MDO of TBW transport aircraft for both medium-range and long-range missions were studied while minimizing the take-off gross weight (TOGW) and the fuel burn as the objective functions. Results show that when the flutter constraint is applied at 1.15 times the dive speed, it imposes a 1.5% penalty on the take-off weight and a 5% penalty on the fuel consumption while minimizing these two objective functions for the medium-range mission. For the long-range mission, the penalties imposed by the similar constraint on the minimum TOGW and minimum fuel burn designs are 3.5% and 7.5%, respectively. Importantly, the resulting TBW designs are still superior to equivalent cantilever designs for both of the missions as they have both lower TOGW and fuel burn. However, a relaxed flutter constraint applied at 1.05 times the dive speed can restrict the penalty on the TOGW to only 0.3% and that on the fuel burn to 2% for minimizing both the objectives, for the medium-range mission. For the long-range mission, a similar relaxed constraint can reduce the penalty on fuel burn to 2.9%. These observations suggest further investigation into active flutter suppression mechanisms for the TBW aircraft to further reduce either the TOGW or the fuel burn. Secondly, the effects of a variable-geometry raked wingtip (VGRWT) on the maneuverability and aeroelastic behavior of passenger aircraft with very flexible truss-braced wings (TBW) were investigated. These TBW designs obtained from the MDO environment while minimizing fuel burn resemble a Boeing 777-200 Long Range (LR) aircraft both in terms of flight mission and aircraft configuration. The VGRWT can sweep forward and aft relative to the wing with the aid of a Novel Control Effector (NCE) mechanism. Results show that the VGRWT can be swept judiciously to alter the bending-torsion coupling and the movement of the center of pressure of wing. Such behavior of the VGRWT is applied to both achieve the required roll control as well as to increase flutter speed, and thus, enable the operation of TBW configurations which have up to 10% lower fuel burn than comparable optimized cantilever wing designs. Finally, a transonic aeroelastic analysis tool was developed which can be used for conceptual design in an MDO environment. Routine transonic aeroelastic analysis require expensive CFD simulations, hence they cannot be performed in an MDO environment. The present approach utilizes the results of a companion study of CFD simulations performed offline for the steady Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes equations for a variety of airfoil parameters. The CFD results are used to develop a response surface which can be used in the MDO environment to perform a Leishman-Beddoes (LB) indicial functions based flutter analysis. A reduced-order model (ROM) is also developed for the unsteady aerodynamic system. Validation of the strip theory based aeroelastic analysis with LB unsteady aerodynamics and the computational efficiency and accuracy of the ROM is demonstrated. Finally, transonic aeroelastic analysis of a TBW aircraft designed for the medium-range flight mission similar to a Boeing 737 next generation (NG) with a cruise Mach number of 0.8 is presented. The results show the potential of the present approach to perform a more accurate, yet inexpensive, flutter analysis for MDO studies of transonic transport aircraft which are expected to undergo flutter at transonic conditions.
- Analysis of Composite Helmet Impact by the Finite Element MethodCallahan, Joseph E. (Virginia Tech, 2011-09-05)We analyze by the finite element method transient deformations of a helmet mounted on a Roma Plastilina #1 clay-filled rigid and stationary headform. The helmet is made of a unidirectional fiber reinforced composite that is modeled as a linear elastic orthotropic material. Hashin's criteria are used to simulate the fiber and the matrix failure. The clay (impactor) is modeled as an elastic-plastic (elastic-viscoplastic), isotropic and homogeneous material. The problem is numerically solved by using the commercial software, ABAQUS, with built-in algorithms to simulate contact between distinct materials (e.g., the clay, the helmet, and the penetrator), and to delete elements whose material has failed. We have verified capabilities of the software for analyzing the penetration problems by solving a few impact problems that have been previously studied by others either experimentally or numerically. The effect of the number of layers in the helmet and the crater formed in the clay due to the impact of the projectile on the helmet has been delineated. It is believed that the crater size in the clay will provide useful information regarding the head injury trauma caused by the impact of a projectile on the helmet.
- Analysis of Composites using PeridynamicsDegl'Incerti Tocci, Corrado (Virginia Tech, 2014-02-07)Since the last century a lot of effort has been spent trying to analyze damage and crack evolution in solids. This field is of interest because of the many applications that require the study of the behavior of materials at the micro- or nanoscale, i.e. modeling of composites and advanced aerospace applications. Peridynamics is a recently developed theory that substitutes the differential equations that constitute classical continuum mechanics with integral equations. Since integral equations are valid at discontinuities and cracks, peridynamics is able to model fracture and damage in a more natural way, without having to work around mathematical singularities present in the classical continuum mechanics theory. The objective of the present work is to show how peridynamics can be implemented in finite element analysis (FEA) using a mesh of one-dimensional truss elements instead of 2-D surface elements. The truss elements can be taken as a representation of the bonds between molecules or particles in the body and their strength is found according to the physical properties of the material. The possibility implementing peridynamics in a finite element framework, the most used method for structural analysis, is critical for expanding the range of problems that can be analyzed, simplifying the verification of the code and for making fracture analysis computationally cheaper. The creation of an in-house code allows for easier modifications, customization and enrichment if more complex cases (such as multiscale modeling of composites or piezoresistive materials) are to be analyzed. The problems discussed in the present thesis involve plates with holes and inclusions subjected to tension. Displacement boundary conditions are applied in all cases. The results show good agreement with theory as well as with empirical observation. Stress concentrations reflect the behavior of materials in real life, cracks spontaneously initiate and debonding naturally happens at the right locations. Several examples clearly show this behavior and prove that peridynamics is a promising tool for stress and fracture analysis.
- Analysis of film cooling performance of tripod holeRamesh, Sridharan (Virginia Tech, 2016-09-09)The thermal efficiency of a gas turbine directly depends on the rotor inlet temperature. The ever increasing demand for more power and advances in the field of engineering enabled this temperature to be pushed higher. But the material strength of the blades and vanes can often impose restrictions on the thermal load it can bear. This is where gas turbine cooling becomes very critical and a better cooling design has the potential to extend the blade life span, enables higher rotor inlet temperatures, conserves compressor bleed air. Among various kinds of cooling involved in gas turbines, film cooling will be the subject of this study. A novel concept for film cooling holes referred to as anti-vortex design proposed in 2007 is explored in this study. Coolant exits through two bifurcated cylindrical holes that branched out on either side of the central hole resulting in a tripod-like arrangement. Coolant from the side holes interacted with the mainstream and produced vortices that countered the main central rotating vortex pairs, weakening it and pushing the coolant jet towards the surface. In order to understand the performance of this anti-vortex tripod film cooling, a flat plate test setup and a low speed subsonic wind tunnel linear cascade were built. Transient heat transfer experiments were carried out in the flat plate test setup using Infrared thermography. Film cooling performance was quantified by measuring adiabatic effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient ratio. In order to gauge the performance, other standard hole geometries were also tested and compared with. Following the results from the flat plate test rig, film cooling performance was also evaluated on the surface of an airfoil. Adiabatic effectiveness was measured at different coolant mass flow rates. The tripod hole consistently provided better cooling compared to the standard cylindrical hole in both the flat plate and cascade experiments. In order to understand the anti-vortex concept which is one of the primary reason behind better performance of the tripod film cooling hole geometry, numerical simulations (CFD) were carried out at steady state using RANS turbulence models. The interaction of the coolant from the side holes with the mainstream forms vortices that tries to suppress the vortex formed by the central hole. This causes the coolant jet from the central to stay close to the surface and increases its coverage. Additionally, the coolant getting distributed into three individual units reduces the exit momentum ratio. Tripod holes were found to be capable of providing better effectiveness even while consuming almost half the coolant used by the standard cylindrical holes.
- Analysis of Ionospheric Data Sets to Identify Periodic Signatures Matching Atmospheric Planetary WavesNorton, Andrew David (Virginia Tech, 2021-01-07)Atmospheric planetary waves play a role in introducing variability to the low-latitude ionosphere. To better understand this coupling, this study investigates times when oscillations seen in both atmospheric planetary waves and ionospheric data-sets have similar periodicity. The planetary wave data-set used are temperature observations made by Sounding of the Atmosphere using Broadband Emission Radiometry (SABER). These highlight periods during which 2-Day westward propagating wave-number 3 waves are evident in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere. The ionospheric data-set is Total Electron Content (TEC), which is used to identify periods during which the ionosphere appears to respond to the planetary waves. Data from KP and F10.7 indices are used to determine events that may be of external origin. A 17-year time-span from 2002 to 2018 is used for this analysis so that both times of solar minimum and maximum can be studied. To extract the periods of this collection of data a Morlet Wavelet analysis is used, along with thresholding to indicate events when similar periods are seen in each data-set. Trends are then determined, which can lead to verification of previous assumptions and new discoveries.
- Analysis, Design, and Experimentation of Beam-Like StructuresMiglani, Jitish (Virginia Tech, 2022-03-23)Significant research is ongoing in the world to meet the needs of social and environmental crisis by harnessing wind and solar energy at high altitudes. One such approach is the use of an inflatable High Altitude Aerial Platform (HAAP). In the presented work, such periodically supported beam-like structures are analyzed using various mathematical models primarily modeling them as an equivalent beam using one-dimensional theories. The Euler-Bernoulli Theory (EBT) has been widely used for high aspect ratio beams, whereas the First Order Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT), or the Timoshenko beam theory, considers transverse shear effects and hence is superior in modeling low aspect ratio beams. First, an Isogeometric Analysis (IGA) is conducted using both FSDT and EBT to predict thermal buckling of periodically supported composite beams. Isogeometric analysis overcomes the limitations of the Gibbs phenomenon at discontinuities for a periodically supported beam using a higher order textit{k}-refinement. Next, an Integral Equation Approach (IEA) is implemented using EBT to obtain natural frequencies and buckling loads of periodically supported non-prismatic beams. Ill-conditioning errors were alleviated using admissible orthogonal Chebychev polynomials to obtain higher modes. We also present the prediction of the onset of flutter instability for metal plate and inflatable wing shaped foam test articles analyzed using finite element analysis (FEA). FEA updating based on modal testing and by conducting a geometrically nonlinear analysis resulted in a good agreement against the experiment tests. Furthermore, a nonlinear co-rotational large displacement/rotation FEA including the effects of the pressure as a follower forces was implemented to predict deformations of an inflatable structures. The developed FEA based tool namely Structural Analysis of Inflatables using FEA (SAIF) was compared with the experiments and available literature. It is concluded that the validity of the developed tool depends on the flexibility of the beam, which further depends upon the length of the beam and the bending rigidity of the beam. Inflatable structures analyzed with materials with high value of the Young's modulus and low to medium slenderness ratio tend to perform better against the experimental data. This is attributed to the presence of wrinkling and/or the Brazier effect (ovalling of the cross section) for flexible beams. The presented work has applications in programmable buckling, uncertainty quantification, and design of futuristic HAAP models to help face the upcoming environmental crises and meet the societal needs.
- Automation and Expert System Framework for Coupled Shell-Solid Finite Element Modeling of Complex StructuresPalwankar, Manasi Prafulla (Virginia Tech, 2022-03-25)Finite Element (FE) analysis is a powerful numerical technique widely utilized to simulate the real-world response of complex engineering structures. With the advancements in adaptive optimization frameworks, multi-fidelity (coupled shell-solid) FE models are increasingly sought during the early design stages where a large design space is being explored. This is because multi-fidelity models have the potential to provide accurate solutions at a much lower computational cost. However, the time and effort required to create accurate and optimal multi-fidelity models with acceptable meshes for highly complex structures is still significant and is a major bottleneck in the FE modeling process. Additionally, there is a significant level of subjectivity involved in the decision-making about the multi-fidelity element topology due to a high dependence on the analyst's experience and expertise, which often leads to disagreements between analysts regarding the optimal modeling approach and heavy losses due to schedule delays. Moreover, this analyst-to-analyst variability can also result in significantly different final engineering designs. Thus, there is a greater need to accelerate the FE modeling process by automating the development of robust and adaptable multi-fidelity models as well as eliminating the subjectivity and art involved in the development of multi-fidelity models. This dissertation presents techniques and frameworks for accelerating the finite element modeling process of multi-fidelity models. A framework for the automated development of multi-fidelity models with adaptable 2-D/3-D topology using the parameterized full-fidelity and structural fidelity models is presented. Additionally, issues related to the automated meshing of highly complex assemblies is discussed and a strategic volume decomposition technique blueprint is proposed for achieving robust hexahedral meshes in complicated assembly models. A comparison of the full-solid, full-shell, and different multi-fidelity models of a highly complex stiffened thin-walled pressure vessel under external and internal tank pressure is presented. Results reveal that automation of multi-fidelity model generation in an integrated fashion including the geometry creation, meshing and post-processing can result in considerable reduction in cost and efforts. Secondly, the issue of analyst-to-analyst variability is addressed using a Decision Tree (DT) based Fuzzy Inference System (FIS) for recommending optimal 2D-3D element topology for a multi-fidelity model. Specifically, the FIS takes the structural geometry and desired accuracy as inputs (for a range of load cases) and infers the optimal 2D-3D topology distribution. Once developed, the FIS can provide real-time optimal choices along with interpretability that provides confidence to the analyst regarding the modeling choices. The proposed techniques and frameworks can be generalized to more complex problems including non-linear finite element models and as well as adaptable mesh generation schemes.
- An Autonomous Underwater Vehicle for Validating Internal Actuator Control StrategiesSchultz, Christopher R. (Virginia Tech, 2006-05-05)There are benefits to the use of internal actuators for rotational maneuvers of small-scale underwater vehicles. Internal actuators are protected from the outside environment by the external pressure hull and will not disturb the surrounding environment during inspection tasks. Additionally, internal actuators do not rely on the relative fluid motion to exert control moments, therefore they are useful at low speed and in hover. This paper describes the design, fabrication and testing of one such autonomously controlled, internally actuated underwater vehicle. The Internally Actuated, Modular Bodied, Untethered Submersible (IAMBUS) can be used to validate non-linear control strategies using internal actuators. Vehicle attitude control is provided by three orthogonally mounted reaction wheels. The housing is a spherical glass pressure vessel, which contains all of the components, such as actuators, ballast system, power supply, on-board computer and inertial sensor. Since the housing is spherically symmetric, the hydrodynamics of IAMBUS are uncoupled (e.g. a roll maneuver does not impact pitch or yaw). This hull shape enables IAMBUS to be used as a spacecraft attitude dynamics and control simulator with full rotational freedom.
- Buckling Analysis of Composite Stiffened Panels and Shells in Aerospace StructureBeji, Faycel Ben Hedi (Virginia Tech, 2018-01-08)Stiffeners attached to composite panels and shells may significantly increase the overall buckling load of the resultant stiffened structure. Initially, an extensive literature review was conducted over the past ten years of published work wherein research was conducted on grid stiffened composite structures and stiffened panels, due to their applications in weight sensitive structures. Failure modes identified in the literature had been addressed and divided into a few categories including: buckling of the skin between stiffeners, stiffener crippling and overall buckling. Different methods have been used to predict those failures. These different methods can be divided into two main categories, the smeared stiffener method and the discrete stiffener method. Both of these methods were used and compared in this thesis. First, a buckling analysis was conducted for the case of a grid stiffened composite pressure vessel. Second, a buckling analysis was conducted under the compressive load on the composite stiffened panels for the case of one, two and three longitudinal stiffeners and then, using different parameters, stiffened panels under combined compressive and shear load for the case of one longitudinal centric stiffener and one longitudinal eccentric stiffener, two stiffeners and three stiffeners.
- Buckling, Flutter, and Postbuckling Optimization of Composite StructuresSeresta, Omprakash (Virginia Tech, 2007-02-27)This research work deals with the design and optimization of a large composite structure. In design of large structural systems, it is customary to divide the problem into many smaller independent/semi-independent local design problems. For example, the wing structure design problem is decomposed into several local panel design problem. The use of composite necessitates the inclusion of ply angles as design variables. These design variables are discrete in nature because of manufacturing constraint. The multilevel approach results into a nonblended solution with no continuity of laminate layups across the panels. The nonblended solution is not desirable because of two reasons. First, the structural integrity of the whole system is questionable. Second, even if there is continuity to some extent, the manufacturing process ends up being costlier. In this work, we develop a global local design methodology to design blended composite laminates across the whole structural system. The blending constraint is imposed via a guide based approach within the genetic algorithm optimization scheme. Two different blending schemes are investigated, outer and inner blending. The global local approach is implemented for a complex composite wing structure design problem, which is known to have a strong global local coupling. To reduce the computational cost, the originally proposed local one dimensional search is replaced by an intuitive local improvement operator. The local panels design problem arises in global/local wing structure design has a straight edge boundary condition. A postbuckling analysis module is developed for such panels with applied edge displacements. A parametric study of the effects of flexural and inplane stiffnesses on the design of composite laminates for optimal postbuckling performance is done. The design optimization of composite laminates for postbuckling strength is properly formulated with stacking sequence as design variables. Next, we formulate the stacking sequence design (fiber orientation angle of the layers) of laminated composite flat panels for maximum supersonic flutter speed and maximum thermal buckling capacity. The design is constrained so that the behavior of the panel in the vicinity of the flutter boundary should be limited to stable limit cycle oscillation. A parametric study is carried out to investigate the tradeoff between designs for thermal buckling and flutter. In an effort to include the postbuckling constraint into the multilevel design optimization of large composite structure, an alternative cheap methodology for predicting load paths in postbuckled structure is presented. This approach being computationally less expensive compared to full scale nonlinear analysis can be used in conjunction with an optimizer for preliminary design of large composite structure with postbuckling constraint. This approach assumes that the postbuckled stiffness of the structure, though reduced considerably, remains linear. The analytical expressions for postbuckled stiffness are given in a form that can be used with any commercially available linear finite element solver. Using the developed approximate load path prediction scheme, a global local design approach is developed to design large composite structure with blending and local postbuckling constraints. The methodology is demonstrated via a composite wing box design with blended laminates.
- Carbon Nanotube Based Dosimetry of Neutron and Gamma RadiationNelson, Anthony J. (Virginia Tech, 2016-04-29)As the world's nuclear reactors approach the end of their originally planned lifetimes and seek license extensions, which would allow them to operate for another 20 years, accurate information regarding neutron radiation exposure is more important than ever. Structural components such as the reactor pressure vessel (RPV) become embrittled by neutron irradiation, reducing their capability to resist crack growth and increasing the risk of catastrophic failure. The current dosimetry approaches used in these high flux environments do not provide real-time information. Instead, radiation dose is calculated using computer simulations, which are checked against dose readings that are only available during refueling once every 1.5-2 years. These dose readings are also very expensive, requiring highly trained technicians to handle radioactive material and operate specialized characterization equipment. This dissertation describes the development of a novel neutron radiation dosimeter based on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) that not only provides accurate real-time dosimetry, but also does so at very low cost, without the need for complex instrumentation, highly trained operators, or handling of radioactive material. Furthermore, since this device is based on radiation damage rather than radioactivation, its readings are time-independent, which is beneficial for nuclear forensics. In addition to development of a novel dosimeter, this work also provides insight into the particularly under-investigated topic of the effects of neutron irradiation of carbon nanotubes. This work details the fabrication and characterization of carbon nanotube based neutron and gamma radiation dosimeters. They consist of a random network of CNTs, sealed under a layer of silicon dioxide, spanning the gap between two electrodes to form a conductive path. They were fabricated using conventional wafer processing techniques, making them intrinsically scalable and ready for mass production. Electrical properties were measured before and after irradiation at several doses, demonstrating a consistent repeatable trend that can be effectively used to measure dose. Changes to the microstructure were investigated using Raman spectroscopy, which confirmed that the changes to electrical properties are due to increasing defect concentration. The results outlined in this dissertation will have significant impacts on both the commercial nuclear industry and on the nanomaterials scientific community. The dosimeter design has been refined to the point where it is nearly ready to be deployed commercially. This device will significantly improve accuracy of RPV lifetime assessment while at the same time reducing costs. The insights into the behavior of CNTs in neutron and gamma radiation environments is of great interest to scientists and engineers studying these nanomaterials.
- Characterizing Magnetic Particle Transport for Microfluidic ApplicationsSinha, Ashok (Virginia Tech, 2008-09-25)Magnetic particles with active functional groups offer numerous advantages for use in μ-TAS (Micro Total Analytical Systems). The functional site allows chemical binding of the particle with the target species in the fluid sample. Selection of the functional group establishes the target molecule and vice versa under assumptions of highly specific biding. The particles hence act as mobile reaction substrates with high surface to volume ratios owing to their small size. The concept of action at a distance allows their use as agents for separation in microchannels based on relatively simple design. It is possible to manipulate magnetic particles and bound target species using an externally applied magnetic field. Hence, the particles can be effectively separated from the flow of a carrier fluid. Magnetic fields create dipolar interactions causing the particles to form interesting structures and aggregates. Depending upon the applied field, the microstructure evolution of the aggregate is interesting in its own right, e.g. related to improvements in material properties and bottom-up self assembly. The shape of the aggregates can be determined a priori if the interaction between the particles is well characterized. The dominant competing forces that influence magnetic particle dynamics in a flow are magnetic and viscous. There are a number of physical parameters such as viscosity, magnetic susceptibility, fluid velocity, etc. which are varied to study their individual effects. Initially dilute suspensions are studied experimentally and numerically using a particle based dynamics approach. Once established, a force model for particle interaction is investigated for concentrated suspensions. A Lagrangian particle tracking algorithm that returns positions of the particles is used for this work that focuses on studying the dynamics of these particles. A mathematical model is proposed and investigated for functionalization between magnetic and non-magnetic particles. Having characterized the collection of magnetic particles, the effect of relative concentrations is investigated on the collection of the non-magnetic species.
- Compression After Impact Experiments and Analysis on Honeycomb Core Sandwich Panels with Thin FacesheetsMcQuigg, Thomas Dale (Virginia Tech, 2011-05-27)A better understanding of the effect of impact damage on composite structures is necessary to give the engineer an ability to design safe, efficient structures. Current composite structures suffer severe strength reduction under compressive loading conditions, due to even light damage, such as from low velocity impact. A review is undertaken to access the current state-of-development in the areas of experimental testing, and analysis methods. A set of experiments on Nomex honeycomb core sandwich panels, with thin woven fiberglass cloth facesheets, is described, which includes detailed instrumentation and unique observation techniques. These techniques include high speed video photography of compression after impact (CAI) failure, as well as, digital image correlation (DIC) for full-field deformation measurements. The effect of nominal core density on the observed failure mode is described. A finite element model (FEM) is developed to simulate the experiments performed in the current study. The purpose of this simulation is to predict the experimental test results, and to conrm the experimental test conclusions. A newly-developed, commercial implementation of the Multicontinuum Failure Theory (MCT) for progressive failure analysis (PFA) in composite laminates, Helius:MCT, is included in this model. The inclusion of PFA in the present model gives it the new, unique ability to account for multiple failure modes. In addition, significant impact damage detail is included in the model as a result of a large amount of easily available experimental test data. A sensitivity study is used to assess the effect of each damage detail on overall analysis results. Mesh convergence of the new FEM is also discussed. Analysis results are compared to the experimental results for each of the 32 CAI sandwich panel specimens tested to failure. The failure of each specimen is accurately predicted in a high-fidelity, physics-based simulation and the results highlight key improvements in the understanding of honeycomb core sandwich panel CAI failure. Finally, a parametric study highlights the strength benefits compared to mass penalty for various core densities.
- Computational and Experimental Nano MechanicsAlipour Skandani, Amir (Virginia Tech, 2014-09-04)The many advances of nano technology extensively revolutionize mechanics. A tremendous need is growing to further bridge the gap between the classical mechanics and the nano scale for many applications at different engineering fields. For instance, the themes of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary topics are getting more and more attention especially when the coherency is needed in diagnosing and treating terminal diseases or overcoming environmental threats. The fact that how mechanical, biomedical and electrical engineering can contribute to diagnosing and treating a tumor per se is both interesting and unveiling the necessity of further investments in these fields. This dissertation presents three different investigations in the area of nano mechanics and nano materials spanning from computational bioengineering to making mechanically more versatile composites. The first part of this dissertation presents a numerical approach to study the effects of the carbon nano tubes (CNTs) on the human body in general and their absorbability into the lipid cell membranes in particular. Single wall carbon nano tubes (SWCNTs) are the elaborate examples of nano materials that departed from mere mechanical applications to the biomedical applications such as drug delivery vehicles. Recently, experimental biology provided detailed insights of the SWCNTs interaction with live organs. However, due to the instrumental and technical limitations, there are still numerous concerns yet to be addressed. In such situation, utilizing numerical simulation is a viable alternative to the experimental practices. From this perspective, this dissertation reports a molecular dynamics (MD) study to provide better insights on the effect of the carbon nano tubes chiralities and aspect ratios on their interaction with a lipid bilayer membrane as well as their reciprocal effects with surface functionalizing. Single walled carbon nano tubes can be utilized to diffuse selectively on the targeted cell via surface functionalizing. Many experimental attempts have smeared polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a biocompatible surfactant to carbon nano tubes. The simulation results indicated that SWCNTs have different time-evolving mechanisms to internalize within the lipid membrane. These mechanisms comprise both penetration and endocytosis. Also, this study revealed effects of length and chirality and surface functionalizing on the penetrability of different nano tubes. The second part of the dissertation introduces a novel in situ method for qualitative and quantitative measurements of the negative stiffness of a single crystal utilizing nano mechanical characterization; nano indentation. The concept of negative stiffness was first introduced by metastable structures and later by materials with negative stiffness when embedded in a stiffer (positive stiffness) matrix. However, this is the first time a direct quantitative method is developed to measure the exact value of the negative stiffness for triglycine sulfate (TGS) crystals. With the advancements in the precise measuring devices and sensors, instrumented nano indentation became a reliable tool for measuring submicron properties of variety of materials ranging from single phase humongous materials to nano composites with heterogeneous microstructures. The developed approach in this chapter of the dissertation outlines how some modifications of the standard nano indentation tests can be utilized to measure the negative stiffness of a ferroelectric material at its Curie temperature. Finally, the last two chapters outline the possible improvements in the mechanical properties of conventional carbon fiber composites by introducing 1D nano fillers to them. Particularly, their viscoelastic and viscoplastic behavior are studied extensively and different modeling techniques are utilized. Conventional structural materials are being replaced with the fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs) in many different applications such as civil structures or aerospace and car industries. This is mainly due to their high strength to weight ratio and relatively easy fabrication methods. However, these composites did not reach their full potential due to durability limitations. The majorities of these limitations stem from the polymeric matrix or the interface between the matrix and fibers where poor adhesion fails to carry the desired mechanical loadings. Among such failures are the time-induced deformations or delayed failures that can cause fatal disasters if not taken care of properly. Many methodologies are offered so far to improve the FRPs' resistance to this category of time-induced deformations and delayed failures. Several researchers tried to modify the chemical formulation of polymers coming up with stiffer and less viscous matrices. Others tried to modify the adhesion of the fibers to the matrix by adding different chemically functional groups onto the fibers' surface. A third approach tried to modify the fiber to matrix adhesion and at the same time improve the viscous properties of the matrix itself. This can be achieved by growing 1D nano fillers on the fibers so that one side is bonded to the fiber and the other side embedded in the matrix enhancing the matrix with less viscous deformability. It is shown that resistance to creep deformation and stress relaxation of laminated composites improved considerably in the presence of the nano fillers such as multiwall carbon nano tubes (MWCNTs) and zinc oxide nano wires (ZnO- NWs). The constitutive behaviors of these hybrid composites were investigated further through the use of the time temperatures superposition (TTS) principle for the linear viscoelastic behavior and utilizing phenomenological models for the viscoplastic behavior.
