- The concept of integrated natural resource management (INRM) and its implications for developing evaluation methodsDouthwaite, B.; Ekboir, J. M.; Twomlow, S. J.; Keatinge, J. D. H. (Wallingford, UK: CABI Publishing, 2005)Research is now seen as part of a collective effort to create new technical and social options that rely more on local knowledge and less on a "one size fits all" application of simple technologies and chemical inputs. Hence, working in partnerships has become much more important, as has grassroots participation of farmers and their organizations. A second important area of change is that farmers are increasingly exposed to global markets, and while the information and communication revolution offers exciting opportunities for them to benefit, it also threatens to create a "digital divide" between rural and urban areas. Over-all, IARC's and NARES need to become much more nimble and responsive in the face of an ever-faster rate of change.
- Increasing productivity and improving livelihoods in semi-arid areas: Research-development linkages, a case study from southeast ZimbabweEllis-Jones, J.; Zvarevashe, V.; Twomlow, S. J.; Stevenson, K. (Silsoe, England: Institution of Agricultural Engineers, 2001)Small dams provide water for household irrigation systems in Masvingo, Zimbabwe, but water capacity is threatened by siltation. CARE works with a variety of international organizations as well as local farmers to promote conservation practices in dam catchments. The study addresses erosion control, water-conserving farming techniques, and participatory planning. It includes the results of a socio-economic survey of local households and summarizes performance of a variety of soil conservation structures, planting methods, and seed varieties.
