- The profits of power: Land rights and agricultural investment in GhanaGoldstein, M.; Udry, C. (Chicago, IL: The University of Chicago, 2008)This article investigates the impact of contested land rights on investment and productivity in agriculture in Akwapim, Ghana. The authors find that insecure land tenure in Ghana is associated with greatly reduced investment in land fertility. Individuals who are not central to the networks social and political power are much more likely to have their land expropriated while it lies fallow. Powerful individuals invest more in their land's fertility and thus have higher yields.
- Social learning through networks: The adoption of new agricultural technologies in GhanaConley, T. G.; Udry, C. (West Sussex: Blackwell Publishing on behalf of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, 2001)This article focuses on how farmers learn about new technologies since the adoption of a new technology is a central feature of the transformation of farming systems. There are many possible sources to learn about new technologies such as from other farmers, the extension service, the media, or researchers. The authors focus on how pineapple farmers in Ghana learn in a way that contradicts much of the existing work on this topic.
