- Approaches for Developing and Implementing Precision Feeding Programs to Maximize Feed EfficiencyPrice, Tanner Paige (Virginia Tech, 2020-05-18)Nutritional management of dairy cattle is of importance to the industry due to its influence on production performance and association with large expenses for producers. Current ration formulation may be improved by predicting feeding recommendations for individual animals, rather than groups of animals, through precision feeding. Automated feeding systems (AFS) designed to deliver individual rations must include response-based models that utilize individual cow production data to make feed recommendations. These models require large data sets of individual cow responses to a variety of nutritional interventions. As a result, an experiment was designed to collect individual response data from 24 Holstein cows fed supplemental top dresses. After analyses, dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield (MY), milk fat yield, milk protein yield, feed efficiency, and activity were significantly affected by top dress (P < 0.001). These results suggest opportunity to use precision feeding to implement economically optimal ration recommendations designed to increase dairy cow production. Therefore, a second experiment was conducted in order to develop and test two algorithms that targeted individualized feeding to increase feed efficiency. Milk protein percentage (P = 0.008) and feed efficiency (P < 0.001) were significantly affected by a 3-way interaction between top dress, algorithm, and week. These results highlight the opportunity for precision feeding to increase the efficiency of individual dairy cows. Although the control group resulted in greater income over feed costs than either of the developed algorithm feeding strategies, algorithm refinement and modification may result in more efficient feeding recommendations that are economically viable.
- Assessing Availability and Utilization of Essential Amino Acids in Dairy Cattle Using Stable Isotope Based ApproachHuang, Xinbei (Virginia Tech, 2020-02-19)Determining the AA availability and metabolism in ruminant is a big challenge due to the rumen fermentation and complicated post absorption utilization. Current techniques used for direct determination of AA absorption and metabolism are laborious and expensive with large variation. The objectives of this project were to investigate AA availability of rumen undegradable protein, develop a stable isotope technique for determination of microbial protein and to evaluate the metabolism of amino acids in mammary glands of dairy cattle using stable isotope-based approaches. In the first experiment, seven heifers (258 ± 28 kg BW) were randomly chosen and assigned to 8 treatment sequences in a 7 x 8, incomplete, Latin square design. Treatments were a basal diet (BD), and 10% (DM basis) of BD replaced by corn silage (CS), grass hay (GH), alfalfa hay (AH), dried distillers grain (DDGS), soybean hulls (SH), wet brewers grain (BG), or corn grain (CG). Individual essential AA availabilities for corn silage, grass hay, alfalfa hay, dried distillers grain, soyhulls, brewers grain and corn grain were 33.4, 29.9, 34.1, 40.6, 28.8, 41.2, and 36.5% of the essential AA in each of the respective ingredients when a loss of 8.27% to splanchnic utilization during first pass was assumed; however, availability varied across individual essential AA. In the second experiment, twelve cows were blocked into 3 groups according to days in milk and randomly assigned to 4 treatments in a repeated 4 x 4 Latin square design with 2 factors to evaluate the essential AA availability from microbial protein and rumen undegradable protein under different rumen fermentation conditions. The 4 treatments were high rumen undegradable protein and high starch (HPHS), low rumen undegradable protein and high starch (LPHS), high rumen undegradable protein and low starch (HPLS) and low rumen undegradable protein and low starch (LPLS). Microbial protein synthesis calculated from purine derivatives was positively associated with rumen degradable protein, which was consistent with total microbial AA entry derived from the isotope dilution model indicating that the isotope based approach was representative. The individual essential AA availability from microbial protein was determined by isotope technique, whereas the PD method was just total PD absorption reflecting CP absorption. The metabolizable AA estimates from NDS nutritional model was similar to results from isotope dilution models, but with smaller difference among treatments. The microbial protein estimated from White's model showed the same trend among treatments compared to isotope dilution model, which may imply it represents the rumen fermentation better. The average essential AA digestibility for microbial AA was 82%, which varied across individual AA and treatments. In the third experiment, four cows (78 ± 10 DIM) were used to study the effects of jugular infusion of 2 groups of AA on essential AA uptake and metabolism by mammary glands in a 4 x 4 Latin square design. Treatments were jugular infusion of saline (CON), methionine plus lysine plus histidine (MKH), isoleucine plus leucine (IL), or MKH plus IL (MKH+IL). The MKH increased milk protein yield in high producing dairy cows. The IL infusion increased milk and milk lactose yields. The production response was associated with a change in mammary plasma flow together with changes in AA uptake and metabolism in mammary gland. Mammary uptake of essential AA was 135 % of milk protein output. Efflux of EAA from the mammary to blood was 13-61% of influx, which was high for BCAA but low for Met and Lys. Changes in influx and efflux resulted in net uptake difference of infused essential AA that were responsive to varying supplies resulting in maintenance of homeostasis. The proportion of AA catabolized and used for milk protein was affected by EAA infusion, which demonstrated plasticity of mammary gland in AA metabolism. Overall, results suggested essential AA availability from rumen undegraded protein and microbial protein varied across individual AA and diets and can be affected by rumen fermentation. After absorption, EAA transport into mammary tissue was bi-directional and their metabolism was affected by AA supply and energy. Using a single coefficient to represent all AA digestibility in MCP or feed ingredient and an integrated efficiency of MP-AA converted into milk protein is inaccurate.
- Brokered Alignment of Long-Tailed Observations (BALTO) Applications in GeoscienceStamps, D. (2019-06-13)Driven by data-rich use cases that span geodesy, geodynamics, seismology, and ecohydrology, the BALTO project enables brokered access to diverse geoscience data, including data that have been collected/organized by individual scientists in novel or unusual forms, also known as “long-tail” datasets. In BALTO, “brokering” means Web services that match diverse data-usage needs with heterogeneous types of source-data. This matching addresses form and semantics, which includes protocols, data structures, encodings, units of measure, variable names, and sampling meshes. The BALTO broker employs an extensible hub-and-spoke architecture: its hub will combine well-established, open-source, data-as-service software (from OPeNDAP) with the Geoscience Standard Names (GSN) to establish canonical representations for brokered datasets; each spoke—called an accessor—comprises (source-specific) data-access software along with metadata mappings that yield GSN-compliant variable names.
- Brokered Alignment of Long-Tailed Observations (BALTO) Applications in GeoscienceStamps, D. (2019-07-17)The Internet of Things (IoT), interconnection of computing devices embedded in everyday objects, has given geo-data scientists access to quickly growing numbers of devices for sensing; at costs no longer requiring hardware grants to access. The BALTO project has realized the importance of these growing sensor networks and has been working to integrate these sensors that can be combined into sustainable and synergistic research and education programs, from K-16 through senior researchers, centered on real-time monitoring and analytics of coupled ecosystems. BALTO takes advantage of the OpenSource Long-Range communication protocol (LoRa) to connect sensors to EarthCube Architectures.
- Can consumers’ willingness to pay incentivize adoption of environmental impact reducing technologies in meat animal production?White, Robin R.; Brady, Michael (2014-12)This study develops a model estimating consumer willingness to pay (WTP) for environmental meat attributes and uses a multi-objective nutritional optimizer to explore the extent to which WTP can offset on-farm costs of reducing water use. Data for the WTP model are sourced from a literature survey of the Agricola and Google Scholar databases yielding 46 studies estimating WTP for pure and impure (organic, grass-fed, natural) environmental meat attributes. Bayesian analysis is used to estimate 3 models varying in independent variables. Models are evaluated by the correlation coefficient (R2), root mean squared error of prediction (RMSPE) and posterior model probability. The most probable model is then used to estimate a confidence range of WTP for pure environmental beef. Impure environmental labels result in higher WTP than pure labels. Non-hypothetical WTP for pure environmental labeling for North American consumers ranges from 6.7% to 32.6%. A case study is conducted to identify the expected reduction in water use that can be funded from capturing WTP through labeling. A multi-objective nutritional optimizer is used to identify ideal management of beef cattle to reduce whole-system water use in three regions of the United States. Cost increases from management are varied over the predicted range in WTP and combined with the probability of a consumer purchasing beef at each WTP value to identify the theoretical effect on expected environmental impact reduction. A 10% premium is the ideal WTP, resulting in water use reductions between 24.4 L and 41.4 L.

(Oxford University Press, 2021-07)The objective of this study was to assess differences in reproductive performance of natural service and artificial insemination (AI) sired beef females based on pregnancy outcomes, age at first calving, and calving interval. Data were sourced from 8,938 cows sired by AI bulls and 3,320 cows sired by natural service bulls between 2010 and 2017. All cows were in a commercial Angus herd with 17 management units located throughout Virginia and represented spring and fall calving seasons. All calves were born to dams managed with estrus synchronization. Pregnancy was analyzed with generalized linear mixed models and other reproductive measures with linear mixed models in R. Six models were evaluated with the dependent variables of pregnancy status at the first diagnosis, pregnancy status at the second diagnosis, pregnancy type (AI or natural service) at the first diagnosis, pregnancy type at the second diagnosis, calving interval, and age at first calving. Independent variables differed by model but included sire type of the female (AI or natural service), prebreeding measures of age, weight, and body condition score, postpartum interval, sex of the calf nursing the cow, and management group. No differences were observed between AI- and natural service-sired females based on pregnancy status at first and second pregnancy diagnosis (P > 0.05). Sire type was only found to be significant for age at first calving (P < 0.05) with AI-sired females being 26.6 ± 1.6 d older at their first calving, which was expected because AI-sired females were born early in the calving season making them older at breeding. Surprisingly, age and body condition score were not significant predictors of pregnancy (P > 0.05). Body weight at breeding was not significant for pregnancy (P > 0.05) but was significant for age at first calving (P < 0.05). These data suggested that lighter heifers calved earlier which contradicts our original hypothesis. Overall, commercial Angus females sired by AI or natural service bulls had similar reproductive performance. Factors that were commonly associated with reproductive success were not significant in this commercial Angus herd managed with estrus synchronization. Given the size of these data, the importance of body condition, age, and weight should be reassessed in modern genetics and management practices.
- Complementary transcriptomic and proteomic analyses reveal regulatory mechanisms of milk protein production in dairy cows consuming different forages.Dai, Wenting; Chen, Qiong; Wang, Quanjuan; White, Robin R.; Liu, Jianxin; Liu, Hongyun (2017-03-14)Forage plays a critical role in the milk production of dairy cows; however, the mechanisms regulating bovine milk synthesis in dairy cows fed high forage rations with different basal forage types are not well-understood. In the study, rice straw (RS, low-quality) and alfalfa hay (AH, high-quality) diets were fed to lactating cows to explore how forage quality affected the molecular mechanisms regulating milk production using RNA-seq transcriptomic method with iTRAQ proteomic technique. A total of 554 transcripts (423 increased and 131 decreased) and 517 proteins (231 up-regulated and 286 down-regulated) were differentially expressed in the mammary glands of the two groups. The correlation analysis demonstrated seven proteins (six up-regulated and one down-regulated) had consistent mRNA expression. Functional analysis of the differentially expressed transcripts/proteins suggested that enhanced capacity for energy and fatty acid metabolism, increased protein degradation, reduced protein synthesis, decreased amino acid metabolism and depressed cell growth were related to RS consumption. The results indicated cows consuming RS diets may have had depressed milk protein synthesis because these animals had decreased capacity for protein synthesis, enhanced proteolysis, inefficient energy generation and reduced cell growth. Additional work evaluating RS- and AH-based rations may help better isolate molecular adaptations to low nutrient availability during lactation.
- Contributions of dairy products to environmental impacts and nutritional supplies from United States agricultureLiebe, Douglas M.; Hall, Mary Beth; White, Robin R. (2020-11-01)Questions regarding the balance between the contribution to human nutrition and the environmental impact of livestock food products rarely evaluate specific species or how to accomplish the recommended depopulation. The objective of this study was to assess current contributions of the US dairy industry to the supply of nutrients and environmental impact, characterize potential impacts of alternative land use for land previously used for crops for dairy cattle, and evaluate the impacts of these approaches on US dairy herd depopulation. We modeled 3 scenarios to reflect different sets of assumptions for how and why to remove dairy cattle from the US food production system coupled with 4 land-use strategies for the potential newly available land previously cropped for dairy feed. Scenarios also differed in assumptions of how to repurpose land previously used to grow grain for dairy cows. The current system provides sufficient fluid milk to meet the annual energy, protein, and calcium requirements of 71.2, 169, and 254 million people, respectively. Vitamins supplied by dairy products also make up a high proportion of total domestic supplies from foods, with dairy providing 39% of the vitamin A, 54% of the vitamin D, 47% of the riboflavin, 57% of the vitamin B12, and 29% of the choline available for human consumption in the United States. Retiring (maintaining animals without milk harvesting) dairy cattle under their current managemerit resulted in no change in absolute greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) relative to the current production system. Both depopulation and retirement to pasture resulted in modest reductions (6.8-12.0%) in GHGE relative to the current agricultural system. Most dairy cow removal scenarios reduced availability of essential micronutrients such as a-linolenic acid, Ca, and vitamins A, D, B12, and choline. Those removal scenarios that did not reduce micronutrient availability also did not improve GHGE relative to the current production system. These results suggest that removal of dairy cattle to reduce GHGE without reducing the supply of the most limiting nutrients to the population would be difficult.

Monitoring the life index of ruminant animals is of importance for intelligent farming. Here, a wearable sensor for monitoring ultraviolet (UV) radiation is demonstrated to understand the effect of primary and secondary photosensitization on dairy animals. Thin films of wide bandgap semiconductor zinc oxide (ZnO) comprising multilevel of nanostructures from microparticles (MP) to nanoparticles (NP), and tetrapod (T-ZnO), were prepared as the UV sensing active materials. The sensitivity was evaluated by exposing the films to various radiation sources, i.e., 365 nm (UV A), 302 nm (UV B), and 254 nm (UV C), and measuring the electrical resistance change. T-ZnO is found to exhibit higher sensitivity and stable response (on/off) upon exposure to UV A and UV B radiation, which is attributed to their higher surface area, aspect ratio, porosity, and interconnective networks inducing a high density of chemical interaction sites and consequently improved photocurrent generation. A wearable sensor using T-ZnO is packaged and attached to a collar for dynamic monitoring of UV response on ruminant animals (e.g., sheep in this study). The excellent performance of T-ZnO wearable sensors for ruminant animals also holds the potential for a wider range of applications such as residential buildings and public spaces.
- The effects of dexamethasone administration on physiological, behavioral, and production parameters in dairy cows after a difficult calvingSwartz, T. H.; Bryant, D. M.; Schramm, H. H.; Duncan, A. J.; White, Robin R.; Wood, C. M.; Petersson-Wolfe, Christina S. (Elsevier, 2023-01)Dairy cows are predisposed to diseases during the postpartum period. Dystocia has been associated with increased risk for disease, which is likely the result of increased tissue trauma and stress during the prolonged parturition. To attenuate the inflammatory response seen in dystocic animals and improve well-being, we assessed the effects of a glucocorticoid, dexamethasone administered within 12 h after calving. Dystocia was defined as a difficult birth resulting in a prolonged calv-ing (>= 70 min after the amniotic sac appears) and was monitored through 3 video cameras in the close-up dry-cow pen. Cows meeting the dystocia definition were randomly assigned to receive a single intramuscular injection of either dexamethasone (DEX; 0.1 mg/kg of body weight; n = 43) or saline (CON, n = 44) within 12 h following a dystocic calving. Serum haptoglobin, blood beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) concentrations, body temperature, and several behaviors were measured for the first 7 d postpartum. Additionally, milk production and components for the first 120 d were recorded. Using a mixed model, the fixed effects of treatment, parity, calving assistance, and time, along with 2-and 3-way interactions, were analyzed with cow as a random effect. We observed that primiparous DEX cows had greater serum haptoglobin concentrations on d 3 and d 7 post-partum compared with primiparous CON cows. There was no difference between treatment groups for blood BHB concentrations and body temperature. Behavior was altered between treatments, with DEX cows having reduced activity for the first week postpartum, as well as less restlessness and increased lying times on some of the days following calving. Treatment interacted with time for milk yield, such that DEX cows produced 2.7 kg/d less milk than CON cows for the first month fol-lowing calving. The administration of dexamethasone resulted in changes in behavioral measurements, which could suggest a reduction in discomfort; however, due to the reduction in milk yield for the first month follow-ing calving, DEX administration may not be applicable for typical farm use. Additional research is needed to investigate treatments for cows experiencing dystocia without detrimental effects on milk yield.
- Effects of mid-gestational l-citrulline supplementation to twin-bearing ewes on umbilical blood flow, placental development, and lamb production traitsKott, Michelle L.; Pancini, Stefania; Speckhart, Savannah L.; Kimble, Lauren N.; White, Robin R.; Stewart, Jamie L.; Johnson, Sally E.; Ealy, Alan D. (Oxford University Press, 2021-07)The objective of the study was to examine how l-citrulline supplementation to ewes during mid-gestation influences placental activity, placental blood flow, lamb body weight, and carcass characteristics. Two studies were completed. A pharmacokinetic study to compare circulating plasma amino acid concentrations after a single intravenous injection of 155 µmol/kg BW l-citrulline or after an isonitrogenous amount of l-alanine (control; 465 µmol/kg BW). Increases (P < 0.05) in circulating citrulline concentrations were detected for 8 h after l-citrulline injection versus the control. Similarly, increases (P < 0.05) in circulating arginine concentrations were detected for 24 h after l-citrulline treatment. The second study used 12 ewes with twin pregnancies. Daily intravenous injections of either l-citrulline or l-alanine were administered for 39 d from d 42-45 to 81-84 of gestation. Ewes were limit-fed at 85% daily energy requirements during the injection period. A decrease (P < 0.0001) in body weight was observed in both treatment groups during this period. No treatment differences were observed in circulating pregnancy-specific protein B concentrations or placental blood flow during the treatment and post-treatment gestational period. No treatment differences were observed in lamb survival nor in lamb birth, weaning and slaughter weights. Treatment did not influence lamb carcass composition or organ weights. However, there was a tendency (P = 0.10) for an increase in antral follicle numbers in ovaries from ewe lambs derived from ewes treated with l-citrulline. In summary, a daily l-citrulline injection increased both circulating citrulline and arginine concentrations in ewes, but daily l-citrulline injections during mid-gestation did not produce any detectable changes in placental activity and blood flow, neonatal and postnatal lamb development, and lamb carcass composition at slaughter. In conclusion, no benefits in placental function and lamb development were observed after providing l-citrulline during mid-gestation in ewes exposed to a mild energy restriction, but there was an indication that follicle numbers in ewe lambs were positively influenced by l-citrulline treatment during fetal development.
- Effects of ruminal nutrient degradability on volatile fatty acid dynamics, ruminal epithelial gene expression, and post-absorptive systemBeckett, Linda Marie (Virginia Tech, 2019-02-05)This study evaluated degradable nutrient supply effects on VFA concentrations, fluid flux and pool sizes, rumen epithelial metabolic and absorptive genes, and post-absorptive muscle and blood responses. Six ruminally cannulated Holstein heifers (BW=330 ± 11.3 kg) were used in a partially replicated Latin Square experiment with four treatments consisting of beet pulp or timothy hay and barley or corn grain. Periods were18 d with 3 d diet adaptation and 15 d of treatment. During each period, d 10 to 14 was used for in situ nutrient degradation assessment, d 16 to 18 was used for rumen fluid sampling, and d 18 was used for rumen papillae and skeletal muscle biopsies and blood sampling. In situ ruminal starch disappearance rate (barley 7.61 to 10.5 %/h vs corn 7.30 to 8.72%/h; P = 0.05) and extent of fiber disappearance (timothy hay 22.2 to 33.4 % DM vs beet pulp 34.4 to 38.7 % DM P=0.0007) differed significantly among diets. Acetate (P = 0.02) and isovalerate (P = 0.008) molar percentages (% mol) were increased by timothy hay, but propionate (P = 0.06) and valerate (P = 0.10) molar percentages were decreased. Corn increased propionate (P = 0.02) and valerate (P = 0.049) molar percentage, but decreased butyrate (P = 0.04) molar proportion. Fluid volume and fluid passage rate, and individual VFA pool sizes were not influenced by diet (P > 0.05). Four epithelial genes, two metabolic and two absorptive, had increased expression on timothy hay diets (P < 0.15). Blood acetate concentration was influenced by treatment (P = 0.067) but no other blood metabolites were. Skeletal muscle metabolic rate was significantly increased on corn diets (P = 0.023). The results of this study provide a whole-system snapshot of how the rumen environment changes on diets differing in nutrient degradability and how the post-absorptive system adapts in response.
- Efficacy of Wearable Therapies on the Ability to Improve Performance and Physical Health in Sport HorsesSchmidt, Therese Elizabeth (Virginia Tech, 2023-04-25)Equines have been used for utilized for manual labor, recreation, and companionship amongst many other valuable conveniences since their domestication. As the modern horse progressed from livestock to athlete, attention was paid to the body conformation to be used as an indicator of biomechanics and can dictate equine performance. Poor conformation can put physical limitations on the body and predispose the horse to injury and chronic disease. When not managed properly, these flaws can lead to injury, lameness, and premature retirement in sport horses. The distal limb is composed of tendons and ligaments that are all susceptible to tear or rupture. Protective wraps or boots are typically applied to the distal limb prior to exercise to prevent superficial injury from the environment or interference. However, these preventatives can trap heat against the skin which can have detrimental effects on the fibroblasts which can lead to failure. It was not until the early twentieth century that the idea of equine physiotherapy was adopted, and practices changed to meet remedial needs and create a sustainable, healthy equine athlete. Equine physiotherapy is a broad-spectrum term used to describe the therapeutic efforts made to keep the body in good health by means of prevention of injury to improve or maintain performance. Traditionally, therapeutics are administered by a veterinarian or trained professional in the event of an existing injury. In recent years therapeutics have been commercialized and are readily available for everyday preventative use. The most common readily available treatments being variations of pulsating electromagnetic fields (PEMF), vibration therapy, cryotherapy, and thermotherapy. When used prior to or after exercise, the therapeutics are designed to prepare the body for exercise and improve recovery by increasing circulation and down regulating the inflammatory response. The studies performed evaluate the efficacy of Rambo®Ionic (Horseware, Dundalk,Ireland), Lux Ceramic Therapy® (Schneider Saddlery Co., Inc., Ohio, USA), and Ice-Vibe® (Horseware, Dundalk,Ireland) therapeutic boots when applied to the distal limb as per manufacturer recommendation. The first study evaluated the therapeutic boots ability to alter performance performing gait analysis using the ALOGO™ MovePro (Alogo Technologies, Switzerland) stride sensor, blood analysis measuring serum concentrations of C reactive protein (CRP), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and tenascin-C (TN-C), and capturing thermal images of the distal limb using an HT-19 thermal imaging camera (HTI, La Vergne, TN). In this study, eight healthy horses were exercised for approximately ten minutes per day for five consecutive days. There was a ten-day washout period where the horse received no treatment between each period; there was a total of four periods. The second study only evaluated Rambo®Ionic (Horseware, Dundalk,Ireland) and Ice-Vibe® (Horseware, Dundalk,Ireland) therapeutic boots on seventeen healthy horses in the Virginia Tech equitation lesson program. There were three periods with five days of consecutive data collection and a ten-day washout period in between where the horses received no treatment. Gait analysis was measured using the ALOGO™ MovePro (Alogo Technologies, Switzerland) stride sensor and a blind behavioral analysis was performed to analyze behavioral changes under saddle in response to a rider.
- Environmental, Biochemical, and Dietary Factors that Influence Rumen Development in Dairy CalvesCeh, Carrie Ann (Virginia Tech, 2019-07-12)The dairy industry today is beginning to dedicate more focus on the growth of the calf from birth to first breeding to better improve the milk production as well as the overall performance of the individual cows. While the development of the rumen is one of the most vital contributors to the performance of the calf, it remains unknown what molecular mechanisms are responsible for the development of the rumen, and more specifically the proliferation of rumen epithelial cells. The objectives of this study were to investigate the existing data on rumen development through meta-analysis and to explore the effects of sodium butyrate and lipopolysaccharide (LPS) on rumen development in calves through experiment. In the first study a meta-analysis was performed to summarize the literature on calf performance and derive equations that relate rumen (e.g., rumen pH, reticulorumen weight, papillae area) and non-rumen factors (e.g., feed composition, form of feed, housing) to animal performance (e.g., intake of milk replacer (MR), starter, and forage; average daily gain (ADG); and feed efficiency). We looked at four different relationships to further investigate the connections between rumen, non-rumen, and performance factors. In the first and second relationships of interest, the effect of dietary and environmental variables on rumen variables and performance variables were examined, respectively. The third relationship of interest was how rumen variables influenced performance variables. The final relationship of interest was investigating the additive effects of the rumen, dietary, and environmental variables on the performance variables. Forward selection, multiple regression was used to derive equations to select variables that explained variation in the response variable in each model. Results showed that the variation in calf ADG was explained by daily forage intake, calves that were weaned, total starter intake, and total MR intake (concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) = 0.976). The variation in feed to gain ratio was explained by the weight of the ruminal contents, daily forage, MR, and starter intakes, percent of starter in the diet, and total starter intake (CCC = 0.992). The variation in daily forage intake was explained by the percent of the diet that was starter or MR (CCC = 0.998). The variation in daily starter intake was explained by the percent of acid detergent fiber in the starter, a pelleted starter (versus a texturized), diets including starter and forage (versus a milk replacer only diet), and the percent of the diet that was MR (CCC = 0.998). The variation in daily MR intake was explained by the percent of the diet that was starter, final body weight, ruminal propionate concentration, and daily starter intake (CCC = 0.918). Based on these analyses, although dietary and environmental factors are closely associated with calf performance, ruminal factors such as volatile fatty acid (VFA) concentration and ruminal contents appear to have additional, additive influences on calf performance. In the second study, 24 Holstein bull calves were challenged with oral doses of LPS and sodium butyrate. The hypothesis here was that LPS and sodium butyrate would instigate rumen cell proliferation independently and additively. Calves were assigned to one of four treatments: control (CON; n=5), butyrate (BUTY; n=5), LPS only (LPS-O) (n=6), or LPS plus butyrate (LPSB; n=6). All treatments were administered orally twice daily consisting of either: 0.9% saline (CON); 11 mM sodium butyrate (BUTY); LPS ranging from 2.5 to 40 µg/kg metabolic body weight (BW0.75, LPS), or both butyrate and LPS (LPSB). Calves were fed milk replacer (22% CP, 20% fat, as-fed) and starter (20% CP, 3% fat, as-fed) based on metabolic BW, or about 12% BW of MR and 3% BW of starter. Feed intake, fecal and respiratory scores, and rectal temperature were recorded daily. Calf BW, hip height, jugular blood samples, and rumen content samples (via oroesophageal tube) were collected weekly. Calves were weaned at 6 wk of age and euthanized at 8 wk of age, whereupon ruminal weights and ruminal samples for papillae area and epithelial thickness were collected. Blood and rumen samples were analyzed for concentrations of beta-hydroxybutyrate, glucose, LPS-binding protein, and VFA. Data were analyzed as a 2x2 factorial with the repeated effect of week. Three non-orthogonal contrasts (CON versus the average of all other treatments; LPS-O versus LPSB, and LPSB versus BUTY) were investigated. Feed intake, health measures, and blood metabolites did not differ by treatment. Calf BW increased by week (P < 0.0001). Irrespective of week, LPS calves weighed more and had higher ADG than BUTY calves (P = 0.020). Irrespective of week, withers height was greater in LPS compared to CON (P = 0.006). Rumen pH and rumen VFA concentrations did not differ by treatment but did decrease and increase, respectively, with week in conjunction with increased starter intake. Total empty forestomach (P = 0.014) and reticulorumen weights (P = 0.012) were greater in LPSB compared to BUTY. Overall, LPS and sodium butyrate appeared to have synergistically affected some, but not all rumen measurements without affecting calf growth, intake, or health. Results from the meta-analysis emphasize the importance of continuing to focus on the solid feed intake of the calf from birth through weaning. Implications from the LPS study are imperative to other dairy scientists who will attempt to further study the effects of LPS on the rumen.
- Estimating Costs of Reducing Environmental Emissions From a Dairy Farm: Multi-objective epsilon-constraint Optimization Versus Single Objective Constrained OptimizationEbadi, Nasim (Virginia Tech, 2020-07-08)Agricultural production is an important source of environmental emissions. While water quality concerns related to animal agriculture have been studied extensively, air quality issues have become an increasing concern. Due to the transfer of nutrients between air, water, and soil, emissions to air can harm water quality. We conduct a multi-objective optimization analysis for a representative dairy farm with two different approaches: nonlinear programming (NLP) and ϵ-constraint optimization to evaluate trade-offs among reduction of multiple pollutants including nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), greenhouse gas (GHG), and ammonia. We evaluated twenty-six different scenar- ios in which we define incremental reductions of N, P, ammonia, and GHG from five to 25% relative to a baseline scenario. The farm entails crop production, livestock production (dairy and broiler), and manure management activities. Results from NLP optimization indicate that reducing P and ammonia emissions is relatively more expen- sive than N and GHG. This result is also confirmed by the ϵ-constraint optimization. However, the latter approach provides limited evidence of trade-offs among reduction of farm pollutants and net returns, while the former approach includes different re- duction scenarios that make trade-offs more evident. Results from both approaches indicate changes in crop rotation and land retirement are the best strategies to reduce N and P emissions while cow diet changes involving less forage represents the best strategy to reduce ammonia and GHG emissions.
- Evaluation of the National Research Council (2001) dairy model and derivation of new prediction equations. 1. (2017-05)Evaluation of ration balancing systems such as the National Research Council (NRC) Nutrient Requirements series is important for improving predictions of animal nutrient requirements and advancing feeding strategies. This work used a. literature data set (n = 550) to evaluate predictions of total-tract digested neutral detergent fiber (NDF), fatty acid (FA), crude protein (CP), and nonfiber carbohydrate (NFC) estimated by the NRC (2001) dairy model. Mean biases suggested that the NRC (2001) lactating cow model overestimated true FA and CP digestibility by 26 and 7%, respectively, and under-predicted NDF digestibility by 16%. All NR,C (2001) estimates had notable mean and slope biases and large root mean squared prediction error (RMSPE), and concordance (CCC) ranged from poor to good. Predicting NDF digestibility with independent equations for legumes, corn silage, other forages, and nonforage feeds improved CCC (0.85 vs. 0.76) compared with the re-derived NRC (2001) equation form (NRC equation with parameter estimates re-derived against this data set). Separate FA digestion coefficients were derived for different fat supplements (animal fats, oils. and other fat types) and for the basal diet. This equation returned improved (from 0.76 to 0.94) CCC compared with the re-derived NRC (2001) equation form. Unique CP digestibility equations were derived for forages, animal protein feeds, plant protein feeds, and other feeds, which improved CCC compared with the re-derived NRC (2001) equation form (0.74 to 0.85). New NFC digestibility coefficients were derived for grain-specific starch digestibilities, with residual organic matter assumed to be 98% digestible. A Monte Carlo cross-validation was performed to evaluate repeatability of model fit. In this procedure, data were randomly subsetted 500 tunes into derivation (60%) and evaluation (40%) data sets, and equations were derived using the derivation data and then evaluated against the independent evaluation data. Models derived with random study effects demonstrated poor repeatability of fit in independent evaluation. Similar equations derived without random study effects showed improved fit against independent data, and little evidence of biased parameter estimates associated with failure to include study effects. The equations derived in this analysis provide interesting insight, into how NDF, starch, FA, and CP digestibilities are affected by intake, feed type, and diet composition.

(2017-05)This work evaluated the National Research Council (NRC) dairy model (2001) predictions of rumen undegradable (RUP) and degradable (RDP) protein compared with measured postruminal non-ammonia, nonmicrobial (NANMN) and microbial N flows. Models were evaluated using the root mean squared prediction error (RMSPE) as a percent of the observed mean; mean and slope biases as percentages of mean squared prediction error (MSPE), and concordance correlation coefficient, (CCC). The NRC (2001) over-estimated NANMN by 18% and under-estimated microbial N by 14%. Both responses had large mean biases (19% and 20% of MSPE, respectively); and NANMN had a slope Dias (22% of MSPE). The NRC NANMN estimate had high RMSPE (46% of observed mean) and low CCC (0.37); updating feed library A, B, and C protein fractions and degradation rate (K-d) estimates with newer literature only marginally improved fit. The re-fit NRC models for NANMN and microbial N had CCC of 0.89 and 0.94, respectively. When compared with a prediction of NANMN as a static mean fraction of N intake; the re-derived NRC approach did not have improved fit. A protein system of intermediate complexity was derived in an attempt to estimate NANMN with improved fit compared with the static mean NANMN model. In this system, postruminal appearance of A, B, and C protein fractions were predicted in a feed-type specific mariner rather than from estimated passage and degradation rates. In a comparison to independent data. achieved through cross-validation; the new protein system improved RMSPE (34 vs. 36% of observed mean) and CCC (0.42 vs. 0.30) compared with the static mean NANMN model. When the NRC microbial N equation was re-derived, the RDP term dropped from the model. Consequently, 2 new microbial protein equations were formulated, both used a saturating (increasing at a decreasing rate) form: one saturated with respect to TDN and the other saturated over increasing intakes of rumen degraded starch and NDF. Both equations expressed maximal microbial N production as a linear function of RDP intake. The function relating microbial N to intake of rumen degradable carbohydrate improved RMSPE (24 vs. 28% of the observed mean) and CCC (0.63 vs 0.30) compared with the re-derived NRC model. The newly derived equations showed modest improvements in model fit and improved capacity to account for known biological effects; however, substantial variability in NANMN and microbial N estimates remained unexplained.

(Frontiers, 2023-04)The objective of the present study was to investigate the interaction of plane of nutrition and naturally occurring coccidiosis on finisher lamb growth performance, FAMACHA score, and rumen volatile fatty acid profile. The study included 30 Su olk, Dorset or Su olk x Dorset lambs and were divided into 2 groups based on their initial body weight and assigned to 2 feeding groups di ering in dietary energy intake to create lambs representing divergent growth curves due to di ering nutritional management. Lambs with naturally occurring coccidiosis and healthy lambs were present in both feeding groups making a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments, (a) high plane of nutrition (HPN) lambs with no clinical coccidiosis diagnosis (HPNH), (b) HPN lambs with clinical coccidiosis (HPNC), (c) low plane of nutrition (LPN) lambs with no clinical coccidiosis diagnosis (LPNH), (d) LPN lambs with clinical coccidiosis (LPNC). Body weight and FAMACHA scores were recorded once every 2 weeks. On d 65 of feeding, lambs were slaughtered, and rumen fluid samples were collected and analyzed for volatile fatty acid concentrations. All response variables were analyzed statistically using a linear mixed e ects model with fixed e ects for plane of nutrition, health status, and a randome ect for initial body weight nested within the pen. The total and average weight gain were not associated with planes of nutrition, health status, or the interaction. Health status had an impact on FAMACHA (c) score (P = 0.047) and concentration of isobutyrate (P = 0.037) and tended to a ect total VFA (P = 0.085) and acetate (P = 0.071) concentrations. The interaction between the plane of nutrition and the health status tended to a ect butyrate concentration (P = 0.058). These data support the conclusion that coccidiosis infection impacted on rumen fermentation in a manner independent of the plane of nutrition; however, the translation of these rumen level impacts did not translate to the production responses.
- Global human-edible nutrient supplies, their sources, and correlations with agricultural environmental impactWhite, Robin R.; Gleason, Claire B. (Nature Portfolio, 2022-10)Food production, sustainable development, population growth, and agricultural environmental impacts are linked global problems that require complex solutions. Many efforts evaluating these challenges primarily evaluate dietary strategies designed for health and environmental objectives without considering the subsequent adaptations required by the global food supply. Here we use a complementary approach to summarize trends and variability in the current agricultural system in the context of the growing population and impending environmental challenges. Globally, agricultural systems produce sufficient nutrients to feed 10 billion people with the exception of Ca, DHA + EPA, vitamins B4, D, and E. In a network analysis, greenhouse gas emissions were conditionally dependent on ruminant meat and milk, while water use was conditionally dependent on vegetable and fruit production; however, supplies of most nutrients were also dependent on these same production categories, suggesting trade-offs between nutritional and environmental objectives. Future work should evaluate strategies to address these compromises (i.e., improving water use efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions), to explore to what extent such compromises are biophysically essential or merely a product of the current agricultural system structures. Given the time-sensitive nature of population growth and environmental concerns, strategies to make more effective use of currently produced agricultural products will also be critical complementary strategies to sustainably feed the growing population which can work in concert with other agricultural-, diet- and policy-focused efforts.
