- Systems Thinking and Leadership Identity Development for Women Farmers in Nigeria: Lesson Plans and WorkbookAdebayo, Bolanle; Sunderman, Hannah M.; Scherer, Hannah H. (2024)Purpose: The continued complexity of agricultural-related challenges has ascertained the need for collective and community leadership approaches to ensure sustainable food systems. Hence, the current paper describes a two-day program designed to develop the leadership identity of 29 young women agricultural entrepreneurs in Nigeria. The program curriculum may be used as a template for agricultural Extension programs that prioritize and incorporate leadership development for sustainable food systems. Design/Methodology: The program curriculum was developed through a backward design approach. Findings: Systems thinking education contributes to participants' collective leadership identity development. Practical Implications: Incorporating systems thinking education in agricultural Extension can enhance farmers’ engagement and commitment to sustainable food systems while promoting their leadership efforts towards resilience in agribusiness. Theoretical Implications: Systems thinking education in Extension programs offers a unique approach to facilitating meaning-making for women farmers through activities that reflect past and current occupational experiences, thereby developing participants' leadership identity and skills. Originality/Value: The program curriculum aimed to foster grassroots and collective leadership identity development, encouraging farmers’ engagement in problem-solving for sustainable food systems.
