Abstract

The Community Design Assistance Center worked with the Campbell County Training School Complex to develop a conceptual site master plan for their property.

The guiding concept for the Campbell County Training School Complex (CCTSC) final design is a blend between past, present, and future. Many memories have shaped this historic Rosenwald school complex throughout its rich history. Bringing together teachers, students, and people throughout the community, it became a home for growth, friendship, and love. Today, as the CCTSC forges a new future, it looks to become a place where new memories and relationships can flourish. “The Porch” offers a place to sit and reminisce. The memory steps commemorate the important figures of the school’s history, recognizing those who shaped what the complex is today. The maypole anchors the central gathering area and is a place where children can partake in the iconic tradition. Regenerative pollinator gardens and an apiary enhance ecological conditions. The woodland trail takes visitors on a contemplative walk through the woods and past a historic structure.
