dc.description.abstractThis teaching tips paper reports the implementation of a graded, handwritten note-taking strategy in an undergraduate Information Systems (IS) telecommunications course to address declining student engagement in increasingly distraction-prone learning environments. Informed by research on active learning, metacognition, and self-determination theory, the intervention was developed in response to challenges posed by ubiquitous mobile technology, generative AI, and shifting student priorities. The strategy was deployed across three course iterations: an initial quiz-recovery model, a session-based submission format, and a cumulative semester-long notebook. Each version emphasizes effort, focus, and autonomy rather than correctness, aiming to counteract digital distraction while fostering attentiveness and cognitive engagement. Findings based on instructional reflection suggest that graded note-taking reduced visible phone use, increased classroom participation, and supported more mindful learning behaviors. Students exhibited behavior that is consistent with a greater focus, reported an appreciation for incentives to study, and generally viewed the assignments positively. While no formal experimental data were collected, consistent patterns across semesters indicate the strategy’s effectiveness as a low-cost, scalable intervention. By framing note-taking as both a metacognitive task and behavioral anchor, this approach offers a sustainable response to the erosion of classroom engagement caused by technological overload. The study contributes to pedagogical conversations in IS education and supports the reintroduction of analog strategies to enhance attention, autonomy, and academic success in the digital age.en
