Abstract

Employment-intensive methods of public works construction have been found to be a cost-effective approach to both construct a variety of civil works and create employment. In sub-Saharan Africa, employment-intensive methods have been used primarily on low-standard (low-cost, low-traffic volume) rural roads. However, these methods could also be used for high-standard, high-traffic roads, without increasing cost or time, or decreasing quality.
