Abstract

In this global economy, especially during the recent economic challenges, providing greater access to postsecondary education to individuals from all racial and ethnic backgrounds remains one of the most important challenges facing our nation. Demographic changes have dramatically increased the proportions of people of color in the United States, and our academic institutions must continue to strive to reflect the complex mosaic that is the American population. Although greater access to higher education for students of color is an absolute imperative, it is only part of the equation. Ensuring their academic success and readiness to thrive in an interconnected world remains the ultimate goal. This report points out how far we have come in our quest for educational excellence for all students, but also cautions us that equity in education for all Americans remains a goal that we must endeavor to reach.
