This brief presentation covers the basics of scholarly communication and suggests potential actions by faculty authors, the university, and Faculty Senate. It was followed by an extensive Q&A though there was no subsequent follow-up. The presentation was given to the Faculty Senate at Virginia Tech on October 12, 2010. It was an outcome of the white paper "The Serials Crisis and Open Access" written for the Commission on Research in December 2009. CoR recommended that the issue be taken to Faculty Senate since it would involve broad faculty engagement.en
