ALCE 2414: Identity and Inclusion in Agriculture and Life Sciences

Abstract

Identity and Inclusion in Agriculture and Life Sciences (ALCE 2414), a course offered through the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, examines the experience of people representing different social identities, statuses, spaces, places, and traditions in the U.S. food system. Throughout the course students use ethical reasoning to recognize and addresses critical issues surrounding inclusion of diverse populations. Students explore how these differences influence experiences individuals may have through many different assignments. In this exhibition, the It’s Your Thing/Express Yourself assignment is featured here. Students were asked to research an aspect of the experiences of an underrepresented population in American agriculture. Through creative expression, the students in ALCE 2414 then examined some of the barriers to inclusion and diversity within the U.S. food system. They then crafted a response which expressed their personal perspective of the issues and challenges with inclusion efforts within the US food system via a creative outlet such as poetry or visual arts.
