Abstract
Most universities say they care about diversity and inclusion, yet research shows that when it comes to policies and practices, universities often fall short of their goals. Why? In this report, the author identifies four ways people – particularly those in positions of power – understand and define diversity. She also discusses these four conceptions, highlighting how universities and their administrations often miss the mark on diversity issues. The author also discusses how to challenge these views and move toward real institutional change.
