- Abiotic Factors Underlying Stress Hormone Level Variation Among Larval AmphibiansChambers, David L. (Virginia Tech, 2009-03-31)Anthropogenic disturbances can alter the abiotic composition of freshwater systems. These compositional changes can act as physiological stressors towards system inhabitants. However, little is known about how these altered abiotic factors influence stress hormones (corticosterone) in larval amphibians. Throughout the following chapters, I examined the effects of several abiotic factors on baseline and stress-induced corticosterone levels in the larvae of four amphibian species: Jefferson salamander (Ambystoma jeffersonianum), spotted salamander (A. maculatum), wood frog (Rana sylvatica), and grey treefrog (Hyla versicolor). Chapter II examined corticosterone level differences throughout development in A. jeffersonianum and R. sylvatica larvae under field, mesocosm, and laboratory venues. Baseline corticosterone levels in R. sylvatica increased near metamorphic climax in all venues, but not in A. jeffersonianum. Rather, baseline corticosterone levels differed with respect to venue throughout development in A. jeffersonianum. Chapter III examined corticosterone level differences among free-living A. jeffersonianum populations and possible abiotic factors underlying these hormone differences. Corticosterone levels significantly differed across populations. Increased baseline corticosterone levels significantly correlated to low pH. There was also a trend for increased baseline corticosterone levels to be positively correlated with chloride levels and negatively correlated with conductivity. Chapter IV examined the effects of laboratory manipulated pH on corticosterone levels in A. jeffersonianum, A. maculatum, R. sylvatica, and H. versicolor. There was a significant correlation between increased baseline corticosterone levels to low pH in all four species. Prey consumption (in both Ambystoma species) and survival (in A. jeffersonianum, A. maculatum, and R. sylvatica) were also negatively correlated to low pH. Chapter V examined the effects of increased conductivity on corticosterone levels in A. jeffersonianum, R. sylvatica, and H. versicolor. Increased conductivity exposure significantly correlated to increased baseline corticosterone levels in A. jeffersonianum and R. sylvatica. Prey consumption in A. jeffersonianum was also negatively correlated to increased conductivity. My dissertation shows that abiotic factors, such as pH and conductivity, can influence corticosterone levels in larval amphibians. These results suggest that corticosterone levels in larval amphibians may be a suitable biomarker reflective of altered freshwater habitat quality. However, my results also suggest that one should use a high degree of caution when using corticosterone levels in larval amphibians as a means to infer the health status of a population.
- Amphibians in a changing world: assessing the effects of warming and drying on amphibian larvae and the relationships between larval survival, body size, and time to metamorphosisShadle, Elizabeth Jane (Virginia Tech, 2020-12-17)Amphibians are influenced by climate change, but we do not have a clear understanding of how changes in temperature, precipitation, or both, may influence amphibian larvae in temperate regions. Do amphibian larvae have similar developmental responses to increased temperature and increased drying rates of wetlands - both plausible effects of climate change? What influence do the interactive effects of temperature and drying have on the relationships between the larval responses themselves (e.g., survival, body size, and time to metamorphosis)? To address these questions, we studied larval responses of two amphibian species, wood frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus) and spring peepers (Pseudacris crucifer), to simulated warming and drying in experimental ponds. Over 13 weeks, we manipulated temperature and water levels in ponds to produce 4 treatments: control, drying, warming, and drying + warming. Our manipulations created warming treatments that were on average 2 ° C higher than controls, and our drying treatments decreased in water depth by 2.5 cm each week compared to warming and control treatments that held a consistent amount of water. In both species, warming treatments resulted in significantly earlier timing of metamorphosis, and drying treatments resulted in significantly reduced body size. We saw a negative relationship between body size and time to metamorphosis (i.e., individuals that metamorphosed faster generally had larger body sizes), indicating an unexpected decoupling of the typical positive relationship between time to- and size at metamorphosis. The strength of the relationship between responses also varied by treatment for wood frogs but not spring peepers, indicating that the responses of larval amphibians to climate change may vary among species. Our study reveals complex relationships among larval survival, body size, and time to metamorphosis and highlights the need for considering not only the role of interacting climate-related pressures on amphibians but also the mechanisms underlying coupling of larval responses to these pressures. We encourage future research and discussion on a better understanding of why different climate pressures caused different responses, and if these patterns may be consistent in other aquatic species.
- Assessment of Physiological Challenges in Overwintering Black Bears (Ursus americanus): Active Gestation, Neonatal Growth, and Skeletal Muscle ConservationMesa Cruz, Jose Bernardo (Virginia Tech, 2018-06-29)The American black bear (ABB) (Ursus americanus) exhibits physiological strategies highly synchronized with the environment. Such strategies enable bears to exploit food resources when available and survive the winter months by hibernating without ingesting food or water. However, there are multiple aspects of ABB hibernation physiology that remain unknown. For instance, there is conflicting evidence on the occurrence of ABB pseudopregnancy (a physiological state in which a non-pregnant bear exhibits progesterone levels similar to gravid bears in the absence of an actual pregnancy). Also, there is little known about postnatal development of cubs or the influence of maternal traits on embryonic implantation and cub growth. Finally, the role of satellite cells (SCs – stem cells able to regenerate muscle fibers) play in maintaining muscle functionality during hibernating remains understudied. Therefore, I aimed to assess these four aforementioned aspects using wild ABBs held temporarily captive at Virginia Tech's Black Bear Research Center (VT-BBRC). The major findings of this dissertation are: 1) I suggest that wild ABBs do not experience pseudopregnancy as a reproductive strategy; 2) interactions between litter size and cub age best described postnatal cub weight dynamics and organ development. Twin cubs were heavier than single and triplet cubs, yet cubs from all litter sizes reached similar weights after mothers began consuming food post hibernation. Single cubs experienced delayed timing in ear, eye, and teeth development compared to other litter sizes; 3) maternal traits such as higher body weight and higher ability to gain weight in the fall are closely associated with earlier timing of embryonic implantation than in leaner females, which gained less weight per day in the fall; and 4) SC ability to generate muscle fibers is increased during ABB hibernation. I propose that maintaining the SCs are an important potential pathway for limiting muscle atrophy during bear hibernation. Understanding pre and postnatal development of ABBs is important for exploring factors related to climate, maternal characteristics, which possibly affect birthing phenology, and fitness of bears experiencing rapid anthropogenic environmental change. Functional aspects of bear muscle conservation are interesting for potentially for elucidating avenues to improve treatments for human metabolic disorders such as muscular dystrophy, sarcopenia, and disuse atrophy.
- Behavior and conservation: hellbender reproductive behavioral responses to poor water quality and the value of private lands research for conservation outreachO'Brien, Rebecca Sarah (Virginia Tech, 2023-09-01)The behavior of humans and animals is an important component of conservation. The way people behave can cause environmental harm, but it also can be a solution to conservation challenges. Similarly, wildlife can respond to changing environments in ways that are detrimental to their survival, but they can also in some cases adapt or even thrive in human-impacted environments. In this dissertation, I discuss the ways in which human and hellbender behaviors relate to conservation. First, using survey and interview data, I explore the reasons why private landowners allow access to their property for research. I find that landowners are more likely to allow research on their property if they have previously allowed research, if they are interested in learning about the research taking place, if they have larger properties, and if they had positive attitudes towards conservation. Conversely, they are less likely to allow access to their property if they are concerned that doing so might restrict free use of their property. Other possible predictors that I investigate, such as landowner demographics, landowner trust in science, and landowner attitudes towards hellbenders are not significant predictors of allowing research. I next explore the effects of engaging landowners in research either via citizen science or "traditional" private lands research where scientists work on the landowner's property, but the landowner is not involved in data collection. I assess the effects of these types of engagement on landowner conservation knowledge, attitudes, awareness, and behavioral intentions and compare the effects across these two treatment groups and a control. I find similar changes in both the traditional and citizen science treatment groups, with involvement in the research leading to greater conservation knowledge, increased awareness of conservation concerns, more positive attitudes towards conservation, and/or more conservation behavioral intentions. However, I observe limited behavior change in any treatment group, and I identify a lack of efficacy and a hesitancy to accept responsibility for water quality degradation as possible barriers to behavior change. My investigations of animal behavior utilize custom-built underwater infrared camera technology to study hellbender reproductive behavior. I first add to current understanding of hellbender breeding behavior by describing the basic hellbender mating sequence, identifying the presence of potential alternative mating tactics, and describing two novel behaviors, including possible signal production via wave-based communication and a unique egg laying behavior by female hellbenders. I then measure the extent to which hellbender males (which provide the parental care) may help protect their offspring from low oxygen and high siltation, and I assess the possibility of trade-offs between parental care behaviors that benefit the eggs and self-maintenance behaviors that benefit the parent. I find that guarding male hellbenders increase both their parental care behaviors and their self-maintenance behaviors in response to low dissolved oxygen, but that they also show evidence of a trade-off between the two, with males ceasing parental care in favor of self-maintenance at sufficiently low levels of dissolved oxygen. Males show no parental response to high levels of silt. My findings add to our understanding of human and animal behavior and highlight the importance of behavioral flexibility to conservation. I find that hellbenders can to some extent modify their behaviors to compensate for the impacts of poor stream management on their own and their offspring's health, and I find that engaging landowners in research can encourage changes in awareness, attitudes, and behavioral intentions regarding conservation.
- Behavior, Physiology, and Reproduction of Urban and Rural Song Sparrows (Melospiza Melodia)Foltz, Sarah (Virginia Tech, 2015-06-01)Urban areas are a unique and growing habitat type. Animals living in this novel habitat are faced with new challenges, but may also encounter novel opportunities. Though urban animals have been observed to differ from their rural counterparts in a variety of behavioral and physiological traits, little is known about the specific features of urban areas that drive these differences and whether they are adaptive. Understanding this process is important from a conservation perspective and also to gain insight into how animals colonize novel habitats more generally. Using song sparrows (Melospiza melodia), a native songbird commonly found in urban areas, I explored responses to urbanization and the drivers and consequences of these responses with an eye toward understanding whether song sparrows had successfully adapted to urban habitats (Chapter I). I began by comparing body condition and levels of corticosterone, a hormone associated with energy management and the stress response in birds, between urban and rural populations (Chapter II). There was more variation across years than between habitats, suggesting that a variable environmental factor common to both habitats is the primary driver of these traits. I then compared territorial aggression levels and tested the effect of food availability on aggression (Chapter III). Fed rural birds and all urban birds had higher aggression levels than unfed rural birds, indicating that territorial aggression is related to resource availability in this species and that urban habitats may be perceived as more desirable. Finally, I looked for differences in reproductive timing and success and for relationships between reproductive success and aggression (Chapter IV). Higher reproductive success in urban populations, coupled with differences in the timing of successful nests between habitats, suggest differences in predation risk and predator community structure between habitats. In Chapter V, I synthesize my major findings and suggest directions for future research building on these results. I conclude that urban song sparrows differ from rural birds, that these differences are influenced by resource availability, and that urban habitats can potentially support stable song sparrow populations, though more research is necessary to determine the fitness impacts of specific traits that change with urbanization.
- Behavioral Heterogeneity and Disease Dynamics in House Finches (Haemorhous mexicanus)Moyers, Sahnzi C. (Virginia Tech, 2017-06-16)Infectious disease is a ubiquitous aspect of life on earth; however, parasites and pathogens are not distributed equally among individual hosts. Due to its ability to shape the way that individuals interact with other potential hosts and the environment, behavior is one of the most salient ways through which host biology varies in the context of disease. Variation in animal behavior can impact both transmission and the extent of a host's pathogen acquisition, and thus can have important consequences for infectious disease dynamics. Additionally, in this world of rapid urbanization where landscapes and wildlife resources are being altered, it is important to understand the ways in which human activity impact wildlife behavior, and in turn, disease dynamics. Here, we used both observational and experimental studies in field and laboratory settings to investigate the relationships among host behavior and physiology, anthropogenic food sources, and disease transmission in a natural host-pathogen system. First, we examined the relationship between house finch (Haemorhous mexicanus) stress physiology, exploratory behaviors, and social behaviors in the wild. We provided evidence that more exploratory house finches interact with more individuals in the wild, and have higher baseline concentrations of circulating stress hormones. Next, we found evidence that the amount of time spent on bird feeders drives both the acquisition and transmission of the bacterial pathogen Mycoplasma gallisepticum (Mg), indicating that variation in host foraging behavior has important transmission consequences in this system. Lastly, we found that the density of bird feeders available to house finches predicts the extent of Mg transmission in captivity. Taken together, these results highlight the important role that behavioral heterogeneity can play in the acquisition and spread of pathogens, as well as the potential impacts of human behavior on wildlife disease dynamics. Future work should seek to identify specific physiological mechanisms driving Mg acquisition and transmission as they relate to variation in host behavior, and the ways in which bird feeders impact disease-relevant behaviors in the wild.
- Bidirectional interactions between behavior and disease in banded mongooses (Mungos mungo) infected with Mycobacterium mungiFairbanks, Bonnie Marie (Virginia Tech, 2013-09-04)Behavior and disease interact bidirectionally and on multiple levels of host organization, and these interactions can have important consequences for population-level disease dynamics. I explored how behavior can both influence and respond to infectious disease in a banded mongoose population experiencing epidemics of tuberculosis (TB) caused by the bacterial pathogen Mycobacterium mungi in the M. tuberculosis complex (Alexander et al. 2010). Banded mongooses are highly social carnivores that live in troops of 5 to 65 individuals. Mycobacterium mungi appears to be primarily environmentally transmitted, but direct horizontal transmission cannot be ruled out. Approximately 10-20% of mongooses become diseased with TB each year in the study population in and around Chobe National Park, Botswana, and all mongooses with clinical signs of TB die within months. Characteristics of both banded mongooses and clinical TB provided a productive study system for exploring interactions between behavior and disease: first, free-living mongooses can be habituated and directly observed; second, the clinical signs of TB can be visually assessed non-invasively; and third, the mongooses' high sociality and egalitarianism provide a unique and ecologically relevant host social system for examining bidirectional interactions between behavior and infectious disease. I found that banded mongooses influenced and responded to disease through their behavior at both the individual and troop level, with possible implications for banded mongoose population and disease dynamics. Due to the environmental transmission of M. mungi, which appears to invade mongooses through breaks in the skin and nasal planum (Alexander et al. 2010), I focused on aggressive interactions as a potential risk factor for acquiring TB in this system. Troops with higher levels of aggression had more injuries, and at the individual level, injuries were a strong predictor of TB, suggesting that aggression may increase risk of disease by creating potential invasion sites for the pathogen. Troops were more aggressive when they foraged in garbage than when they foraged in other habitats, presumably due to the concentration of resources at this highly modified habitat. Overall, my results on how behavior can influence disease in this system suggest that anthropogenic supplementation of food, albeit inadvertent in this system, augments aggression levels in banded mongooses and may in turn lead to a higher incidence of TB. Second, I examined how behavior responds to disease in banded mongooses. Diseased individuals showed significantly lower activity and alertness, but intriguingly, did not show a reduction in overall social behaviors. Diseased individuals were less likely to disperse than healthy individuals, and healthy individuals with diseased troopmates may have been more likely to disperse than individuals without diseased troopmates. Despite this latter possible increase in dispersal in the presence of diseased conspecifics, diseased individuals were not avoided by their troopmates in daily social interactions. For example, diseased individuals were allogroomed at a higher than expected rate even though their reciprocation during allogrooming was approximately half that of healthy individuals. These interactions between behavior and disease have implications for banded mongoose troop and population dynamics, via changes in dispersal behavior and mortality, and can also affect disease dynamics, such as transmission rate. For example, changes to dispersal may affect the amount of inbreeding and outbreeding that occurs in this normally inbred species, and disease might be amplified in areas where aggression is increased by resource augmentation from humans. Additionally, the role that garbage plays in mongoose aggression suggests that humans may be inadvertently increasing disease incidence in this system, as well as in other taxa for which anthropogenic food augmentation may alter disease dynamics via changes in intraspecific aggression. This research sheds light on ways that behavior can influence and respond to disease that are often overlooked in disease ecology.
- Consequences of avian parental incubation behavior for within-clutch variance in incubation temperature and offspring behavioral phenotypesHope, Sydney Frances (Virginia Tech, 2020-01-17)Parents can have large effects on their offspring by influencing the early developmental environment. In birds, a major way that parents can influence the early developmental environment is through egg incubation. Not only is incubation necessary for hatching success, but small changes of <1C in average incubation temperature have large effects on post-hatch offspring morphology and physiology. However, incubation is energetically costly and time-consuming for parents, and thus parents must allocate resources between incubation and self-maintenance. This can lead to differences in parental incubation behavior and egg temperatures among and within populations. Understanding which factors influence incubation, and the subsequent effects for offspring, is crucial for understanding parental effects, non-genetic drivers of phenotypic variation, and how environmental changes affect avian populations. I used wood ducks (Aix sponsa) as a study species to investigate how factors (disturbance, clutch size, ambient temperature) that influence parental demands may affect parental incubation behavior, physiology, and egg temperatures, and subsequently how egg temperatures affect offspring behavior and physiology. In a field experiment, I found that nest disturbance (i.e., capture) reduced both parent prolactin concentrations and the amount of time that parents spent incubating (Chapter 1). Further, ambient temperature was positively and clutch size negatively related to egg temperatures. Notably, in large clutches, differences in average incubation temperature among eggs within nests were large enough (i.e., >1C) to lead to different offspring phenotypes within broods (Chapter 2). Then, in a series of experiments in which I controlled incubation temperature, I provided evidence that lower average incubation temperatures lead to a reduced ability of ducklings to exit the nest cavity (Chapter 3), a more proactive behavioral phenotype (Chapter 4), a smaller body size, and a reduced efficiency in food consumption (Chapter 5), compared to those incubated at higher temperatures. Together, my dissertation illustrates how disturbances, clutch size, and ambient temperature can influence an important aspect of avian parental care, which has wide-ranging effects on offspring traits and fitness. This has broad implications for understanding the evolution of clutch size, development of behavior, and the effects of anthropogenic changes on wildlife.
- Coping with Chronic Infection: The Role of Glucocorticoid Hormones in Mediating Resistance and Tolerance to ParasitesSchoenle, Laura A. (Virginia Tech, 2017-07-10)Parasitic infections are ubiquitous, but the consequences to hosts can vary substantially. Variation in the consequences of infection can be related to individual differences in the use of two parasite defense strategies, resistance and tolerance. Resistance entails reducing parasite burden by removing parasites or restricting parasite reproduction. Tolerance involves minimizing the costs associated with a given parasite burden. Genetic variation, environmental conditions, and life history stage can contribute to variation in resistance and tolerance, but the physiological mechanisms that underlie investment in each strategy are not well understood. I proposed that glucocorticoid hormones, which mediate responses to challenges in the physical and social environment in vertebrates, might alter host investment in resistance and tolerance (Chapter I). Glucocorticoids influence a suite of physiological processes including immune function, resource allocation, and tissue growth, all which could alter resistance and tolerance. Using a combination of observational and experimental studies, I test the hypothesis that glucocorticoids mediate resistance and tolerance to infection in red-winged blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) infected with Haemosporidians, including malaria (Plasmodium) and malaria-like (Haemoproteus and Leucocytozoon) parasites. I performed a medication experiment (Chapter II) to identify the physiological consequences of Haemosporidian infection and explored the relationships between glucocorticoids and parasite resistance and tolerance in both an observational field study and a hormone manipulation experiment (Chapters III and IV). Medication treatment effectively reduced Plasmodium burden, increased hematocrit and hemoglobin, and reduced the rate of red blood cell production (Chapter II). In an observational field study (Chapter III), red-winged blackbirds with higher plasma glucocorticoid concentrations maintained higher hematocrit than expected for their parasite burdens, suggesting a positive association between glucocorticoids and tolerance. In this study, I found no support for a relationship between glucocorticoids and resistance. However, experimental elevation of glucocorticoids (Chapter IV) yielded nearly opposite results: the higher of two doses of glucocorticoids increased Plasmodium burdens and caused a decrease in body mass with increasing parasite burden, indicative of a decrease in tolerance. I discuss possible causes of the differences in our observational and experimental studies and the implications of my work for future studies of individual variation in parasite tolerance (Chapter V).
- Diagnostic techniques for detecting exposure and anemia in birds exposed to crude oilFallon, Jesse Andrew (Virginia Tech, 2022-07-27)Oil spills have long been recognized as a significant threat to wildlife. Historically, mortality estimates have served as the basis for assessing impact to natural resources. However, these mortality estimates alone neglect the more wide-spread impact of oil spills on wildlife including birds, many of which may not immediately succumb to exposure, but instead suffer sublethal injury that may negatively affect physiological homeostasis, reproduction, and long-term survival. Therefore, there is a need to improve our understanding of the risk of exposure and effect of sublethal oiling during damage assessments. In this dissertation I evaluated the extent of sublethal oil exposure in the immediate aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon spill on American oystercatchers (Haematopus palliatus), black skimmers (Rynchops niger), brown pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis), clapper rails (Rallus crepitans), and seaside sparrows (Ammodramus maritimus) through both visual evaluation of and under the application of ultraviolet light to individual birds potentially exposed to oil. I found that there were many individual birds with modest oil exposure, demonstrating that more birds are exposed to oil than are accounted for by mortality estimates. Additionally, I developed a field-adapted technique using an in vitro method in brown pelicans that was effective in determining oxidative hematologic injury as measured by a suite of parameters including a reduction in circulating erythrocytes and hemoglobin, formation of Heinz bodies, and an increase in reticulocytes, in birds exposed to oil. I then applied this suite of parameters to individual birds affected in the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon spill, and found that birds with modest visible or UV-detectible oil exposure suffer hematologic injury, a quantifiable adverse sublethal effect of modest oil exposure. Finally, I used an experimental approach to evaluate the pathologic effects of crude oil exposure in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata), evaluating the same suite of hematologic parameters as well as gross pathology, histopathology, and electron microscopy. This controlled study provided evidence that there may be significant variability in the response of birds to oil exposure that may be attributable to species-specific sensitivity and/or other factors such as the use of dispersants after oil spills. Collectively, this body of work demonstrated that many more birds are exposed to oil during spill events than are accounted for by mortality estimates alone, and that these birds can suffer quantifiable sublethal hematologic injury. The ability to accurately assess the extent of exposure and hematologic damage caused by oil spills is critical to determine the appropriate approach to management needed to offset impacts to fisheries, wildlife, habitats, and economic resources impacted by oil spills.
- Ecology Of Non-Breeding And Breeding Crested Caracaras (Caracara cheriway) In FloridaDwyer, James F. (Virginia Tech, 2010-05-06)Like many species, Florida's population of Northern Crested Caracaras (Caracara cheriway, hereafter "caracara") is likely declining due to loss of breeding habitat. Consequently, management-oriented restrictions on landscape modification are applied where breeding occurs, but management rarely is extended beyond breeding areas. Focusing management on breeding areas can be effective if all caracaras occupy breeding areas, all breeding areas are detected, and no intermittent breeding occurs. Management may not operate as intended if any of these criteria are unmet. To explore this possibility, I investigated the movement, habitat, survival, and social biology of non-breeding caracaras. I also investigated long-term occupancy of breeding habitat, and factors contributing to detection of breeding. Non-breeding caracaras occupy areas much larger than individual breeding territories, particularly during breeding seasons. Pastures occupied by cattle were the most used habitat, but non-breeding caracaras also occupied habitats atypical of breeding areas. Specifically, citrus groves were occupied extensively, and row crops were used particularly during breeding seasons. Non-breeding caracaras also shared communal roosts, sometimes with hundreds of conspecifics, and roosts were occupied year-round. Survival of non-breeding caracaras was lowest during breeding seasons. Adult non-breeding caracaras persisted in groups for multiple years without establishing breeding territories. This implies that breeding habitat is limited and saturated. Given the proportion of adults in groups, adults also were the first to find carrion more often than expected. Apparently, young caracaras benefit from grouping by following adults. I found caracaras at all sampled breeding areas where nests were originally documented during the 1990s, and found nests at 83% of territories where nests likely existed. I also found that observer experience, visit start time, and weather affected the probability that a nest would be detected. Thus, not all caracaras occupy breeding areas, and not all breeding attempts are likely to be detected. Long-term occupancy of breeding areas should render annual verification of nesting unnecessary as a trigger for maintaining management actions. Rather management should persist even without confirmation of annual breeding. Caracara management also may be optimized through supporting the non-breeding population by maintaining a matrix of cattle pasture and citrus groves, particularly around roosts.
- Effects of Forest Regeneration Methods on Salamander Populations in Central AppalachiaHomyack, Jesica Anne (Virginia Tech, 2009-03-20)In forested ecosystems, salamanders occupy important ecological roles as predator, prey and as potential regulators of ecological processes. The effects of forest management, particularly clearcut harvesting, on salamanders have been well documented; removal of overstory trees negatively affects abundances of salamanders. However, the length of time that salamander populations remain depressed following forest harvesting and factors limiting population recovery have been a source of controversy in the literature and are the goal of this dissertation. As part of the Southern Appalachian Silviculture and Biodiversity (SASAB) project (Chapter 1), a long-term replicated field experiment designed to evaluate a range of silvicultural treatments on biodiversity, I evaluated specific hypotheses related to salamander populations, their prey, and their habitat. First, I examined long-term trends in salamander abundances across a range of silvicultural treatments to determine whether negative effects of forest harvesting persisted for 13-years after harvest (Chapter 2) and to document the effects of multiple harvests on salamanders (Chapter 3). The relative abundances of terrestrial salamanders were quantified in six silvicultural treatments and an unharvested control and on six replicated field sites with night-time, area-constrained searches. Across 13-years of post-harvest data, terrestrial salamander abundances generally were lower in silvicultural treatments with some disturbance to the canopy (group selection harvest through silvicultural clearcut). Further, a comparison of demography of common species of salamanders suggested that differences in habitat quality existed between harvested and unharvested experimental units (EUs). A second harvest in the shelterwood plots to remove overwood had a cumulative negative effect on salamanders at one of two sites studied. Additionally, I conducted a sensitivity and elasticity analysis for eastern red-backed salamanders (Plethodon cinereus) and modeled population growth to evaluate the contribution of demographic parameters to population recovery. These analyses indicated that adult survival was the parameter with the greatest influence on the population growth rate and that >60 years would be required for recovery of salamander populations to preharvest levels even if habitat conditions were restored to preharvest conditions immediately. Next, I quantified the bioenergetics of salamanders across a disturbance gradient to evaluate whether changes to (1) invertebrate prey, (2) energy expenditure for basic maintenance costs, and or (3) an index to body condition could help explain observed changes to abundances or demography of salamanders from forest harvesting (Chapter 4). Although I did not detect a difference in abundances of invertebrates along the disturbance gradient, I determined that salamanders in recently disturbed forest stands expended approximately 33% more energy for basic maintenance costs in an active season and the body condition of salamanders was greater at one of two sites in disturbed EUs. Thus, the bioenergetics of terrestrial salamanders may have been affected by increasing temperatures from silvicultural disturbance and may cause salamanders to allocate less energy to reproduction or growth because of increased maintenance costs. In collaboration with Eric Sucre, Department of Forestry at Virginia Tech, I examined the effects of salamanders on invertebrates and ecosystem processes, specifically leaf litter decomposition. We constructed 12 in situ field mesocosms and I manipulated densities of red-backed salamanders into zero, low, and high density treatments. From June 2006-June 2008, I estimated invertebrate abundances, rates of leaf litter decomposition and food habits of salamanders across treatments. I found that invertebrate abundances were more affected by season than by the density of salamanders and that rates of leaf litter decomposition did not differ among salamander treatments. Salamanders were euryphagic and consumed more (by abundance and volume) herbivorous invertebrates than predators or detritivores. Finally, I modeled habitat relationships of terrestrial salamanders at two spatial scales on the SASAB study sites (Chapter 6). I quantified abundance of salamanders with area-constrained searches during warm rainy nights and measured forest characteristics related to foraging or refugia habitats or that described the overstory and understory of forest stands. At the scale of the 30 m2 transect and the 10 m2 sub-transect, abundance of salamanders was best described by models that incorporated descriptors of canopy cover and woody and herbaceous understory vegetation. Thus, terrestrial salamanders may have responded positively to forest stands with a mature overstory and structurally diverse understory for foraging habitat. Collectively, these data suggest that recovery of salamander populations after forest harvesting will take approximately 60 years, and that life history characteristics (low fecundity, late sexual maturity) and possibly changes to bioenergetics may contribute to the slow recovery. Further, silvicultural practices that retain some canopy trees through a rotation may have a more rapid return of salamander populations to preharvest levels and may encourage development of understory structure for salamander foraging. Although these data fill some gaps in knowledge of relationships between silviculture and terrestrial salamanders, many questions about long-term effects of disturbances on populations and habitats remain. My modeling of recovery of salamander populations depended on estimates of a survival from a congener, and I did not document whether forest harvesting decreases survival of terrestrial salamanders. Lastly, the influence of stochastic events on population dynamics particularly in disturbed stands was not examined in this dissertation. Therefore, future research on the SASAB study sites should continue to track abundances and demography across the disturbance gradient, acquire age-specific estimates of survival, determine whether salamanders exhibit density dependence, develop estimates of entire energy budgets, and use manipulative laboratory experiments to describe the role of plethodontid salamanders in ecosystem functions.
- Effects of Land Use on Hellbenders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) at Multiple Levels and Efficacy of Artificial Shelters as a Monitoring ToolJachowski, Catherine M. (Virginia Tech, 2016-07-01)Understanding how species respond to anthropogenic changes and why species respond in the way that they do can help focus conservation planning. Hellbenders (Cryptobranchus alleganiensis) are a freshwater species of increasing conservation concern that are suspected to have declined due to loss of forest cover. However, quantitative evidence of land use effects on hellbenders is lacking. I used a multilevel approach to understanding whether hellbenders respond to land use by examining physiological indices, demographics and patterns of species occurrence as endpoints. My study area included two major river drainages in Virginia which mark a largely understudied portion of the species' range. In Chapter I, I described hellbender distribution and tested the hypothesis that hellbenders would be more likely to occur in heavily forested landscapes. Surprisingly, hellbenders occupied a relatively wide land use gradient (range = 50-90% forest in an upstream catchment) and current land use was an unreliable predictor of occurrence. In Chapter II I examined hellbender abundance and demographics at a subset of study sites stratified across a land use gradient. Abundance of sub-adult/adult hellbenders increased as forest cover increased in collective upstream riparian areas, primarily as the result of increased recruitment of new adults to local populations (rather than increased apparent survival of adults). Populations in lesser forested areas were declining and composed largely of relatively old adults, indicating that land use can lead to changes in hellbender distribution given sufficient time. In Chapter III, I examined three indices of physiological condition (body condition, hematocrit and leukocyte profiles) in hellbenders captured across a land use gradient. I found evidence suggesting low reproductive success may explain reduced recruitment in areas of low forest cover and evidence suggesting hellbender endocrinology during the breeding season may vary with land use. In Chapter IV I examine efficacy of artificial shelters as a monitoring tool and demonstrate their potential as tool to further our understanding of mechanisms underlying demographic responses of hellbenders to land use. I synthesize my findings in Chapter V and conclude that loss of forest cover in riparian areas poses a formidable threat to hellbender population viability in Virginia.
- Effects of urbanization on the physiology, behavior, and fitness of a wild songbirdLane, Samuel Joseph (Virginia Tech, 2022-09-14)As urbanization spreads, understanding its impact on wildlife is increasingly urgent. By comparing the traits and fitness of individuals within the same species found in both urban and rural habitats (urban adapters), we can better understand the behavioral and physiological coping mechanisms wild birds employ in the face of rapid environmental change. For my dissertation, I investigated the physiological, behavioral, and fitness differences between urban and rural living song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) to explore how song sparrows are adjusting to urban environments. In my first chapter, I investigated urban birds' termination of the glucocorticoid stress response by looking at their ability to reduce circulating levels of glucocorticoid 'stress' hormones and the relative abundance of receptors that provide negative feedback in the hippocampus and hypothalamus. I found that urban males have a lower relative abundance of glucocorticoid receptors and the enzyme 11β-HSD2 in the hippocampus compered too rural, though we found no difference in negative feedback at the periphery, as both urban and rural song sparrows responded similarly to a challenge with synthetic glucocorticoid (dexamethasone). In chapter 2, I asked if increased aggression, which has been rigorously documented in urban males, is also expressed by females, and whether this aggressive signaling is constraining other reproductive behaviors such as maternal care. Indeed, female song sparrows, like males, expressed increased aggressive signaling compared to rural, suggesting urban habitats may favor a more aggressive phenotype. Finally, in Chapter 3, I investigated the consequences of increased male aggression on their social partners and offspring by measuring parental care and nestling outcomes across urban and rural habits. I was unable to establish a trade-off between parental care and aggression in either sex, suggesting this increased aggression is not constraining other reproductive behaviors. In fact, the more aggressive urban males visited the nest significantly more frequently, a trend also seen in urban females during the daylight hours, though the relationship was not significant over a 24-hour period. Additionally, urban birds had significantly higher reproductive metrics compared to rural, though they also had the added cost of increase brood parasitism by brown-headed cowbirds (Molothrus ater) compared to rural. Overall increased urban aggression was associated with higher reproductive success without any reduction in paternal care. Additionally, we found physiological differences in the glucocorticoid stress response system associated with the differences in habitat but whether theses differences represent mechanisms of acclimation or potential costs of living in urban habitats is not yet clear.
- Embryonic Developmental Patterns and Energy Expenditure Are Affected by Incubation Temperature in Wood Ducks (Aix sponsa)DuRant, Sarah E.; Hopkins, William A.; Hepp, Gary R. (University of Chicago Press, 2011-09)Recent research in birds has demonstrated that incubation temperature influences a suite of traits important for hatchling development and survival. We explored a possible mechanism for the effects on hatchling quality by determining whether incubation temperature influences embryonic energy expenditure of wood ducks (Aix sponsa). Because avian embryos are ectothermic, we hypothesized that eggs incubated at higher temperatures would have greater energy expenditure at any given day of incubation. However, because eggs incubated at lower temperatures take longer to hatch than embryos incubated at higher temperatures, we hypothesized that the former would expend more energy during incubation. We incubated eggs at three temperatures (35.0 degrees, 35.9 degrees, and 37.0 degrees C) that fall within the range of temperatures of naturally incubated wood duck nests. We then measured the respiration of embryos every 3 d during incubation, immediately after ducks externally pipped, and immediately after hatching. As predicted, embryos incubated at the highest temperature had the highest metabolic rates on most days of incubation, and they exhibited faster rates of development. Yet, because of greater energy expended during the hatching process, embryos incubated at the lowest temperature expended 20%-37% more energy during incubation than did embryos incubated at the higher temperatures. Slower developmental rates and greater embryonic energy expenditure of embryos incubated at the lowest temperature could contribute to their poor physiological performance as ducklings compared with ducklings that hatch from eggs incubated at higher temperatures.
- Evaluating artificial shelter arrays as a minimally invasive monitoring tool for the hellbender Cryptobranchus alleganiensisJachowski, Catherine M. Bodinof; Ross, Beth E.; Hopkins, William A. (2020-02-13)Hellbenders Cryptobranchus alleganiensis are critically imperiled amphibians throughout the eastern USA. Rock-lifting is widely used to monitor hellbenders but can severely disturb habitat. We asked whether artificial shelter occupancy (the proportion of occupied shelters in an array) would function as a proxy for hellbender abundance and thereby serve as a viable alternative to rock-lifting. We hypothesized that shelter occupancy would vary spatially in response to hellbender density, natural shelter density, or both, and would vary temporally with hellbender seasonal activity patterns and time since shelter deployment. We established shelter arrays (n = 30 shelters each) in 6 stream reaches and monitored them monthly for up to 2 yr. We used Bayesian mixed logistic regression and model ranking criteria to assess support for hypotheses concerning drivers of shelter occupancy. In all reaches, shelter occupancy was highest from June-August each year and was higher in Year 2 relative to Year 1. Our best-supported model indicated that the extent of boulder and bedrock (hereafter, natural shelter) in a reach mediated the relationship between hellbender abundance and shelter occupancy. More explicitly, shelter occupancy was positively correlated with abundance when natural shelter covered <20% of a reach, but uncorrelated with abundance when natural shelter was more abundant. While shelter occupancy should not be used to infer variation in hellbender relative abundance when substrate composition varies among reaches, we showed that artificial shelters can function as valuable monitoring tools when reaches meet certain criteria, though regular shelter maintenance is critical.
- Evaluation of the relationships between watershed-scale land use and contaminants in aquatic environments and the use of freshwater snails as indicators of impairmentCiparis, Serena (Virginia Tech, 2011-05-02)The use of manure from animal feeding operations (AFOs) as fertilizer on agricultural land may introduce contaminants to aquatic environments that can negatively affect the health of aquatic organisms. This study utilized a landscape-scale regression-based design to assess the effects of AFOs on contaminant concentrations and resident populations of a pleurocerid snail, Leptoxis carinata, in streams within the Shenandoah River watershed (Virginia, USA). Individual characteristics of L. carinata were also evaluated to provide further understanding of observed population characteristics. In streambed sediment and mollusk tissue, concentrations of the trace element arsenic, used as an additive in poultry feed, were not directly related to watershed densities of AFOs. In-stream concentrations of dissolved nutrients and estrogenic compounds, measured as estrogenic activity, were directly related to watershed densities of AFOs. Population sex ratios of L. carinata varied across study sites, from balanced to female-biased, but were not related to concentrations of estrogenic compounds. However, the spatial variation in population sex ratios, coupled with little variation in site-specific sex ratios across seasons and generations, suggest an influence of site-specific environmental conditions. Individual-level studies of L. carinata revealed that there is an eight month lag between hatching and gametogenesis which could allow disruption of sexual differentiation by environmental contaminants, but further study of the effects of specific contaminants on sexual differentiation in this species is needed. Population densities of L. carinata were related to in-stream nutrient concentrations and landscape sources of nutrients, including AFOs, but none of these factors were directly related to the infection prevalence of digenetic trematodes in L. carinata populations. Although trematode infection rates in L. carinata populations do not appear to be viable indicators of the influence of eutrophic conditions on disease incidence in aquatic organisms, the identification of five types of trematodes in L. carinata populations highlights the utility of this snail species for further investigation of transmission dynamics of trematode parasites in lotic systems.
- Exploring wildlife recreationists' conservation behaviors and perceptions of state fish and wildlife agencies to inform conservation engagement and supportGrooms, Bennett (Virginia Tech, 2021-07-13)The success of state fish and wildlife agency conservation efforts depends highly on their engagement with wildlife recreationists, ranging from those with consumptive (i.e., hunters and anglers) to nonconsumptive (i.e., birders, wildlife viewers) interests. However, declines in their historic constituent base of consumptive recreationists, coupled with an increasingly diverse and interconnected group of nonconsumptive recreationists, has placed new pressures on state fish and wildlife agencies. Human dimensions research into recreationists' behaviors and perceptions can help these agencies determine how best to serve and involve wildlife recreationists, including developing services that fit their interests, engaging them in conservation activities, and providing them with a suite of funding and support mechanisms to contribute to conservation. Developing this understanding can be complicated though, due to the range of behaviors and perceptions wildlife recreationists have regarding conservation and the role of state fish and wildlife agencies. Given this need to better understand how state fish and wildlife agencies can successfully engage their growing and changing wildlife recreation constituency in order to advance conservation, we investigated the perceptions, behaviors, and interactions of Virginia wildlife recreationists relative to the state fish and wildlife agency, the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR). Using a mixed-methods research design, we first looked into the intersection of wildlife recreation identities, to gain a clearer understanding about the implications of individuals who identify as multiple types of recreationists (i.e., consumptive-only, nonconsumptive-only, consumptive-viewers, and comprehensive recreationists). We also used recreation identity to explore how participation in conservation behaviors differs among recreationists. Next, to compare findings from our focus groups and survey, we explored how wildlife recreationist groups (i.e., birders or viewers, hunters or anglers, and multi-recreationists) felt served by a state fish and wildlife agency relative to agency services received by other recreation groups. Lasty, we investigated how recreation groups and level of familiarity with DWR predicted recreationists' future likelihood to financially contribute to the agency via voluntary and user-pay funding mechanisms. Our results highlight the opportunity that wildlife recreationists present for the future success of state fish and wildlife agencies, and the complex conservation challenges these agencies face in engaging with their growing and changing recreation constituencies. Wildlife recreationists are multidimensional in their recreational pursuits, and differ in their familiarity with and perceptions of state fish and wildlife agencies, which has implications for their future support of these agencies. Our findings illustrate the need for state fish and wildlife agencies to develop engagement strategies that provide multiple entry points into and interests in their conservation programs, while also working to enhance agency familiarity among nonconsumptive recreationists, and ensuring that all wildlife recreation groups feel valued in relation to one another.
- Exposure to residual concentrations of elements from a remediated coal fly ash spill does not adversely influence stress and immune responses of nestling tree swallowsBeck, Michelle L.; Hopkins, William A.; Hallagan, John J.; Jackson, Brian P.; Hawley, Dana M. (Oxford University Press, 2014)Anthropogenic activities often produce pollutants that can affect the physiology, growth and reproductive success of wildlife. Many metals and trace elements play important roles in physiological processes, and exposure to even moderately elevated concentrations of essential and non-essential elements could have subtle effects on physiology, particularly during development. We examined the effects of exposure to a number of elements from a coal fly ash spill that occurred in December 2008 and has since been remediated on the stress and immune responses of nestling tree swallows. We found that nestlings at the site of the spill had significantly greater blood concentrations of Cu, Hg, Se and Zn in 2011, but greater concentrations only of Se in 2012, in comparison to reference colonies. The concentrations of elements were below levels of significant toxicological concern in both years. In 2011, we found no relationship between exposure to elements associated with the spill and basal or stress-induced corticosterone concentrations in nestlings. In 2012, we found that Se exposure was not associated with cellmediated immunity based on the response to phytohaemagglutinin injection. However, the bactericidal capacity of nestling plasma had a positive but weak association with blood Se concentrations, and this association was stronger at the spill site. Our results indicate that exposure to these low concentrations of elements had few effects on nestling endocrine and immune physiology. The long-term health consequences of low-level exposure to elements and of exposure to greater element concentrations in avian species require additional study.

(Raptor Research Foundation, 2013)The Gray-bellied Hawk (Accipiter poliogaster) is one of the least studied birds of prey in the neotropics. Its geographical range in South America is from northern Colombia, east to southern Venezuela and the Guianas, south to northeastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, Amazonian and southeastern Brazil, northern Bolivia, southeastern Paraguay and northeastern Argentina (Jenkinson and Tuttle 1976, Ridgely and Greenfield 2001, Thiollay 2007, Global Raptor Information Network 2012). Despite a lack of information regarding its movements, the Gray-bellied Hawk is thought to be a permanent resident in Ecuador due to year-round sightings of the species (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001, Global Raptor Information Network 2012).
