(2016-03-14)A growing number of Virginia higher education libraries are involved in supporting and leading Open Educational Resources (OER) adoption efforts. Statewide, OER initiatives include a unique blend of administrative, grassroots organizations and individuals that work hand in hand to leverage the economic benefits and educational advantages of open educational resources. This article highlights library engagement and leadership, successes and growing pains, on the many levels of OER efforts in Virginia Higher Education.
- In the Highways and the Hedges: Library Support for OER Adoption Efforts at Higher Education Institutions Across VirginiaWalz, Anita R.; Cassidy, Tara; Reinauer, Olivia (2015-11-06)This presentation, given at the Charleston Library Conference, highlighed examples of innovative library approaches to supporting and leading Open Educational Resources (OER) adoption efforts at institutions of higher education across Virginia. Statewide initiatives on OER include a unique blend of administrative and grassroots organizations that work hand in hand to leverage the economic benefits and educational advantages of open educational resources. Attendees heard about grant-funded OER initiatives currently underway; building a supportive, flexible, cross-institutional librarian training community; the rationale, risks, and opportunities for the librarian as open licensing consultant, trainer, and advocate; and growing pains so far. Attendees were challenged to think about current teaching, research, and library practices and policies that prevent sharing and will leave with new ideas about deeper collaboration with entities outside of their institution.
- An Open Textbook Approach to OER: VIVA & the Open Textbook NetworkWalz, Anita R.; Reinauer, Olivia; O'Gara, Genya; Osterman, Anne; Holland, Claudia (2016-10-28)In the Spring of 2016, VIVA joined the Open Textbook Network (OTN) -- a growing collaboration of schools, universities, and institutions that promotes access, affordability, and student success through the use of open textbooks. Nominated by their Deans or Directors, three new system leaders were selected by VIVA to attend the Open Textbook Network Summer Institute at the University of Minnesota, and over thirty campus leaders throughout Virginia were selected to attend Campus Leader Training in early October 2016. VIVA representatives discussed their decision to join the OTN and their hopes for the future. Selected campus leaders discussed what they learned, plans for their institutions and in collaboration with one another.
