Don Welsh, president & CEO of Destinations International, noted the need of best practices for each city given the varying ordinances. Welsh also advocated for more funding for CVBs as the economy begins its early recovery.

    As the pandemic continues, the need to revamp Conventions & Visitors Buerues has increased. CVBs are invaluable resources to the communities they support, but received no federal funding within the pandemic relief funds from Congress. This is due to the fact that CVBs are non-profit organizations that mainly receive revenue from hotel bed tax. The pandemic has allowed Destination International, the trade association that represents CVBs, to re-work CVBs business models and partner with neighboring bureaus or individuals. Fortunately, a handful of CVBs have received local funding, but many are struggling to stay afloat with several furloughs and job cuts.

    California Tourism Industry Lobbies Governor for Reopening Plan

    California Governor Gavin Newsome has put travel and tourism professionals in a bind by note clearly outlining guidelines towards re-opening the state and welcoming events back. The CVBs across California have been scrambling to maintain business and have had to beg clients to not cancel their meetings. Every month that California is closed to the travel and tourism industries, $4.1 billion is lost. The travel industry sent a letter, representing over 130 businesses, requesting Newsome to release clearer standards to get their teams back to work and generating revenue.

    Very early within the COVID-19 pandemic, CVBs knew the impact of COVID-19 would be detrimental to their business model and the way that they have always operated. Within the first week of the pandemic, cancellations for upcoming events went to 100%. Many CVBs were able to assist their communities by continuing to be resources by updating their webpages with COVID-19 statuses around their areas.

    NYC & Company Launches 'Commit the Comeback' Initiative to Drive Local Meetings

    NYC & Company have launched a campaigned to generate local meetings and travel heading into quarters three and four of 2021. NYC & Company, New York City's Convention & Visitors Buerue, have put together a Meet Local NYC Tool Kit and have 10 Reasons to Book Your Next Meeting in NYC list to help generate local planners to book internal meetings across the city's five boroughs. NYC & Company have also launched the Stay Well Pledge, which encourages the city's tourism establishments to follow the structed COVID-19 procedures allocated by the CDC guidelines. In addition NYC & Company's campaign, the Javits Center has also been GBAC Star accredited in coronavirus cleaning and prevention.

    "Marketing of Care" and the future of tourism

    Marketing of Care will be a new "hyper-local" marketing strategy used by marketers as the industry begins showing signs of recovery. Marketing of Care focuses on four pillars of expansive, granular, and personalized experiences to attract the tourist or attendee to the specific destination. The usage of this technique will allow markets to connect with tourists on a deeper level than they previously had to attract tourism to their area. It will be important for CVBs and DMOs to outsource this type of strategy to tap into the tourism markets that are gearing up for the summer travel months.

    Los Angeles Commits to New Health-Security Verification Program

    Los Angeles is on the move to become the first destination to be Sharecare Forbes Travel Guide Badge verified. The city is pushing for all properties within the city limits to become certified within the program to push domestic and group travel back into their city. To earn the verification a property must answer the 360 question form and prove that they have adequate personal protective equipment, masks, strong management accountability, and reliable health and safety communications. The property is monitored by a mobile AI application that confirms the health and safety measure are constantly being put into place.

    Choose Chicago's Marc Anderson Will Head Up Visit San Antonio

    Former head of the Choose Chicago, Marc Anderson, is leaving to head up Visit San Antonio. San Antonio is currently the United States' seventh largest city and relies heavily on tourism to generate revenue. Anderson will bring his industry relationships with Canada, China, and the Middle East to Visit San Antonio. Additionally, Anderson is excited to assist with creating new jobs for the city and propelling Visit San Antonio into their post-pandemic era.

    Phoenix Reveals Downtown Transformations as conventions Return

    Although the COVID-19 pandemic hit many CVBs and almost every city hard when it came to tourism, Visit Phoenix has noted the increased development of their city since the beginning on the pandemic. Phoenix has opened more than 100 new drinking and dining options since the start of the pandemic. Additionally, Phoniex has added roughly 1,900 hotel rooms as the Phoniex Convention Center gears up to host it's first large meeting in June.

    Visit Omaha to Close Offices, Rent Meeting Space from Local Venues

    Visit Omaha is helping to push money into their local economy by formfitting their traditional office setup and pouring their saves back into the community. Visit Omaha will "Rent for Recovery" in up to 52 spaces over the course of this next year. The idea of "Rent for Recovery" will be for Visit Omaha to use their money to help their partners, while providing spaces to continue getting work done. Locations include hotels, attractions, and local restaurants.

    Indy convention industry bouncing back from pandemic shutdown

    Visit Indy is gearing up for a strong decade after booking $50 million in business over the next 10 years. Bookings have heavily increased after the spotlight the NCAA March Madness Tournament shined on the city and the $7 million health and safety upgrades to the convention center. Prior to the pandemic, convention and business tourism employed over 80,000 people and generated $5.6 billion annually. Visit Indy CEO, Chris Gahl, is hopeful to get back to the 2019 truism levels and that the city of Indianapolis will continue to climb the ranks of convention cities across the United States.
