- OAI/ODL Component Composition ExerciseSuleman, Hussein (2002-09-01)This exercise is a hands-on introduction to building digital libraries from components. It is a good introduction for individuals with modest Unix skills, and it reviews the process of using DLbox to create a working digital library.
- Online Information Seeking Behaviors & Search StrategiesOh, Sanghee (2008-02-08)This module covers the theories, models, and practices related to online information seeking behaviors in different settings of digital libraries.
- History of Digital Libraries and Library AutomationPomerantz, Jeffrey P. (2008-08-27)This module covers the origin of the digital library research agenda, DLI, DLI-2, NSDL, and the origin of other long-term digital library projects. Students will be able to name areas of research and development that fed into early digital library work, describe early digital library initiatives, and describe ways in which areas of research and development that fed into early digital library work affect current digital library work.
- Web PublishingKaria, Pratik (2009-09-08)This module covers the general principles of web publishing and the various paradigms that can be used for storing and retrieving content within digital libraries. This module introduces various techniques to publish information in digital libraries and compares and contrasts them. It also discusses how the various paradigms can be used in varied scenarios for different applications.
- Digital Library Evaluation, User StudiesWildemuth, Barbara M.; Pomerantz, Jeffrey P. (2009-10-07)While a number of kinds of evaluation/research studies may be conducted during the design and development of a digital library (e.g., usability testing), this module is concerned with methods for evaluating the outcomes, impacts, or benefits of a digital library, including cost/benefit analyses. It also includes methods that are useful for general user studies (i.e., studies that intend to more fully understand people's interactions with digital libraries). While some methods covered here are useful for usability testing, usability inspections and usability testing are explicitly covered in module 6-d, Interaction Design, Information Summarization and Visualization, and Usability Assessment.
- Reference ServicesPomerantz, Jeffrey P. (2009-10-07)This module presents an overview of human-mediated assistance for information seeking and question answering, and addresses issues in integrating these types of services into DLs.
- Information Needs/RelevanceWildemuth, Barbara M. (2009-10-07)A user's interaction with a DL is often initiated as the result of the user experiencing an information need of some kind. Aspects of that experience and how it might affect the user's interactions with the DL are discussed in this module. In addition, users continuously make decisions about and evaluations of the materials retrieved from a DL, relative to their information needs. Relevance judgments, and their relationship to the user's information needs, are discussed in this module.
- MetadataPomerantz, Jeffrey P. (2009-10-07)This module addresses the use of metadata, specific metadata standards that may be used to describe digital objects, and the creation of metadata records.
- DigitizationOh, Sanghee (2009-10-07)This module covers the principles and application of the digitization process for digital libraries. Students will be able to explain the digitization process, understand the critical issues and challenges of digitization projects, and implement digitization protocols.
- Interaction Design & Usability AssessmentOh, Sanghee (2009-10-07)This module covers the basic concepts and processes related to interaction design for digital libraries. Methods of user analysis, tasks analysis, prototype development, and usability testing will be discussed.
- Application SoftwareYang, Seungwon (2009-10-07)This module covers commonly used application software, which are specifically designed for the creation and development of digital library (DL) systems and similar types of collections and services, such as open access archives.
- DL ArchitecturesYang, Seungwon; Fox, Edward A. (2009-10-07)This module covers digital library architectures, specifically federated architectures, distributed architectures, and service-oriented architectures.
- File Formats, Transformation, and MigrationLeidig, Jonathan; Alon, A. J.; Chigani, Amine; Gopalakrishnan, Mahima; Park, Sung Hee (2009-10-09)This module covers the principles and applications of the transformation and migration processes for the preservation of digital content, as well as key issues surrounding digital preservation strategies.
- PersonalizationRobinson, Ashley; Rosson, Chester; Pochu, Pramodh; Guo, Sheng (2009-10-09)This module addresses Personalization standards that may be appropriate in the context of a digital library, along with its approaches, effects, limitations, and challenges.
- Web ArchivingLee, Spencer; Kanan, Tarek; Jiao, Jian (2009-10-09)This module covers the ideas, approaches, problems and needs of web archiving to build a static and long term collection consisting of web pages.
- ProtocolsSingh, Ajeet; Chen, Yinlin; Santhanam, Srinivasa; Zhu, Weihua (2009-10-09)This module addresses the concepts, development and implementation of digital library protocols and covers the roles of protocols in information retrieval systems (IR) and Service Oriented Architectures (SOA).
- Indexing and SearchingArondekar, Aniket (2009-10-16)This module covers the general principles of information retrieval (IR) models, indexing methods, and the working of search engines applicable to digital libraries.
- RoutingGanesan, Venkatasubramaniam; Fox, Edward A. (2009-12-09)This module presents an overview of models and practices of Routing, leading to better search result quality in Digital Libraries.
