- Application SoftwareYang, Seungwon (2009-10-07)This module covers commonly used application software, which are specifically designed for the creation and development of digital library (DL) systems and similar types of collections and services, such as open access archives.
- Audacity 1.3Brown, Chris (2011-05-01)This module covers the use of Audacity 1.3 hosted on an IBM Cloud Instance. Topics covered include accessing and running Audacity, and manipulating audio files such as splitting, copying, pasting, merging, and exporting.
- CLUTO ToolkitVijay, Sony; El Meligy Abdelhamid, Sherif; Malayattil, Sarosh (2010-10-21)The module briefly introduces the basic concepts of Clustering. The primary focus of the module is to describe the usage of CLUTO, a clustering Toolkit, comprised of various algorithms.
- Conceptual Frameworks, Models, Theories, and DefinitionsFox, Edward A. (2011-05-11)This module introduces several conceptual modules characterizing the digital library domain. Students will be provided with a high level yet comprehensive knowledge of several conceptual frameworks and models, a unifying and extended terminology, and an overall scheme helping to classify further readings.
- CrawlingFox, Edward A.; Khandeparker, Ashwin S. (2012-11-28)This module covers the basic concepts of Web crawling, policies, techniques and how these can be applied to Digital Libraries.
- Digital Library Evaluation, User StudiesWildemuth, Barbara M.; Pomerantz, Jeffrey P. (2009-10-07)While a number of kinds of evaluation/research studies may be conducted during the design and development of a digital library (e.g., usability testing), this module is concerned with methods for evaluating the outcomes, impacts, or benefits of a digital library, including cost/benefit analyses. It also includes methods that are useful for general user studies (i.e., studies that intend to more fully understand people's interactions with digital libraries). While some methods covered here are useful for usability testing, usability inspections and usability testing are explicitly covered in module 6-d, Interaction Design, Information Summarization and Visualization, and Usability Assessment.
- DigitizationOh, Sanghee (2009-10-07)This module covers the principles and application of the digitization process for digital libraries. Students will be able to explain the digitization process, understand the critical issues and challenges of digitization projects, and implement digitization protocols.
- DL ArchitecturesYang, Seungwon; Fox, Edward A. (2009-10-07)This module covers digital library architectures, specifically federated architectures, distributed architectures, and service-oriented architectures.
- Evaluation in Information RetrievalPeddi, Bhanu; Xiong, Huijun; ElSherbiny, Noha (2010-10-26)This module addresses the methods used to evaluate an Information Retrieval system. We focus on evaluating a system using relevance and apply the knowledge by using TREC_EVAL.
- File Formats, Transformation, and MigrationLeidig, Jonathan; Alon, A. J.; Chigani, Amine; Gopalakrishnan, Mahima; Park, Sung Hee (2009-10-09)This module covers the principles and applications of the transformation and migration processes for the preservation of digital content, as well as key issues surrounding digital preservation strategies.
- Hadoop Map-reduceShu, Xiaokui; Cohen, Ron (2010-12-10)Hadoop Map-Reduce is a software framework for writing applications for processing large amounts of data in parallel on commodity hardware.
- Half-Day Tutorial: Collecting, Analyzing, and Visualizing Tweets Using Open Source ToolsYang, Seungwon; Kavanaugh, Andrea L. (2011-06-01)This tutorial introduces various open source tools and methods to archive tweets on a user's local machine and convert them into topic clouds for quick content analysis. For more in-depth techniques such as n-grams and term extraction are introduced along with PHP/Python scripting.
- History of Digital Libraries and Library AutomationPomerantz, Jeffrey P. (2008-08-27)This module covers the origin of the digital library research agenda, DLI, DLI-2, NSDL, and the origin of other long-term digital library projects. Students will be able to name areas of research and development that fed into early digital library work, describe early digital library initiatives, and describe ways in which areas of research and development that fed into early digital library work affect current digital library work.
- Image RetrievalKuppuswami, Nagarajan; Fox, Edward A. (2009-12-09)The module covers basic explanation of Image Retrieval, various techniques used, and its working in existing systems.
- Indexing and SearchingArondekar, Aniket (2009-10-16)This module covers the general principles of information retrieval (IR) models, indexing methods, and the working of search engines applicable to digital libraries.
- Information Needs/RelevanceWildemuth, Barbara M. (2009-10-07)A user's interaction with a DL is often initiated as the result of the user experiencing an information need of some kind. Aspects of that experience and how it might affect the user's interactions with the DL are discussed in this module. In addition, users continuously make decisions about and evaluations of the materials retrieved from a DL, relative to their information needs. Relevance judgments, and their relationship to the user's information needs, are discussed in this module.
- Information Retrieval System EvaluationWei, Shiyi; Suwardiman, Victoria; Swaminathan, Anand (2012-10-03)The module introduces the evaluation in information retrieval. It focuses on the standard measurement of system effectiveness through relevance judgments.
- Interaction Design & Usability AssessmentOh, Sanghee (2009-10-07)This module covers the basic concepts and processes related to interaction design for digital libraries. Methods of user analysis, tasks analysis, prototype development, and usability testing will be discussed.
