The reproductive state and density of the females in a harborage appears to have a bearing on the behavior of the components of that population. This work indicates the presence of a remarkable system of communication, presumably chemical. The differential production of aggregation and dispersion substances seems to be an effective method of maintaining the integrity of a group under favorable conditions.
