E AWAY FROM HOME Home as Memory, Identity, and Light in the Heart of Washington, DC Anosha Fatima The thesis examines the concept of home not merely as a physical structure, but as a deeply felt experience. Home is conceived as something that goes beyond the boundaries of the actual building and is influenced by elements such as memory, emotion, and culture. The thesis further explores the role of architecture as an element that defines the experience of home. Architecture is seen here as a platform through which identity, tradition, and community can be made visible and accessible. Through the integration of theatre as a place of cultural performance, a restaurant as a location of hospitality, and open courtyards as gathering places, the thesis showcases how architectural design can be used to encourage interaction between different groups of people. Through the integration of these programmatic elements, the thesis aims to create a space that not only encourages interaction but also a space that allows a community to be seen and represented.en
E AWAY FROM HOME Home as Memory, Identity, and Light in the Heart of Washington, DC Anosha Fatima Through this thesis, the concept of home will be examined as something more than just a physical structure. Home will be examined in this thesis as a phenomenon that is experienced through memory, emotion, cultural affiliation, and a sense of belonging. This thesis explores how architecture can become a part of this sense of home. Focusing on the representation of the Pakistani culture found in the city of Washington, D.C., the work examines the role of architecture as an instrument to produce spaces where the representation of the culture is possible. The design looks at architecture as a platform, which enables the representation of the culture through experiences. In bringing together a theatre for cultural performances, a restaurant that promotes hospitality, and gathering courtyards, the project presents a chance for people of varied backgrounds to interact. It is within these contexts that the thesis perceives a space that not only fuels interaction but also allows a community to be recognized and represented.en
