The purpose of this thesis is to determine whether industrialization is the best means of raising the incomes of the people living in Pittsylvania County. The earnings of workers in agriculture are among the lowest in the State. The majority of the industries here are low-wage paying industries. From statistics relating to earnings of industrial employees and of earnings of agricultural workers, it is found that manufacturing employees earn much more than agricultural workers. However, the sacrifices made by the people to adjust to a new industry are great enough that industrialization may not be successful unless high-wage paying industries are established. This thesis contains information that may be of interest in attracting industry. Facts about the county’s populations, employment, income, agriculture, manufacturing, and social characteristics are included for an analysis of the people. Its labor resources, education, natural resources, transportation facilities, and existing industries are included for an evaluation of the types of industries that can locate here. Information on facilities that become of interest to industries definitely considering the county is also included. Of the industries that may locate here, the higher-wage paying ones are recommended as the ones to accomplish successful industrialization. These industries are: 1. Concrete and plaster products 2. Fabricated metal products 3. Fabricated structural metal products 4. Machinery (except electrical) 5. Electrical machinery, equipment and supplies 6. Transportation equipment 7. Bakery products 8. Cigarettes 9. Paperboard and paper mills 10. Newspapers and periodicals 11. Commercial printing 12. Industrial chemicals 13. Plaster and synthetic fibersen
