dc.description.abstract"The Rockbridge Artillery, C. S. A." is a socio-military history of an artillery battery during the Civil War. Initially composed of men strictly from Rockbridge County, Va., the battery eventually drew its members from throughout the Confederacy. Taken largely from personal reminiscences, letters and official records, this thesis describes the hardships and pains of serving with the Army of Northern Virginia. It traces the development of the Rockbridge Artillery from its conception in April, 1861, to the surrender at Appomattox in April, 1865--four years of American history that will long live in the minds of man. The thesis describes the battles in which the battery fought from Falling Waters to Cumberland Church. The thesis does not attempt an overall view or the Civil War, but rather a smaller picture as might have been witnessed by a member of the Rockbridge Artillery.en
