Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to determine the effects of various slag constituents on the distribution of phosphorus between slag and copper metal. The various slags and copper were reacted for six hours at 1550°C (2822°F) in a molybdenum boat, and then the amount of phosphorus in each was determined. Colorimeteric techniques were used for the phosphorus determination.
The effects of calcium oxide, barium oxide, calcium fluoride, and magnesium oxide were investigated. For similar basicity ratios barium oxide was found to be a better dephosphorizing agent than any of the other constituents tested. Calcium fluoride's effectiveness as a dephosphorizer was found to be only slight under equilibrium conditions. Magnesium oxide was found to be least effective in removing phosphorus for a given basicity ratio.
