dc.description.abstract | Building is the container of people, furniture, pets and plants. But also the container of stories, time, and memories. To recall memories, architecture offers the possibility of contrast of old buildings and new parts to unfold and highlight what exists in a distinctive way, to make the memories more clear. This thesis uses the notion of amalgam as an example, where new material, natural light, and special spaces form a contrast, to evoke our memories. | en |
dc.description.abstractgeneral | Memory is the fragment of time. Time left marks on buildings which is evidence of stories and memories that happened. In that sense, buildings preserve the memories of people. Urban development combined with population increase. Old buildings are often targered for new developments. The buildings which hold memories of people also facing the problenaturally face the difficulty that their purpose no longer meets the requirements of modern life. Instead of complete replacement, there are many successful cases, which employ new materials and designs, forming together with old buildings, a new architectural amalgam of old and new. This thesis explores a way to preserve memories by highlighting some specific architectural conditions of an exisiting building. Engaging contrast of light, materials, and space. | en |
