Abstract

The need for, and usefulness of, computer-assisted decision making is presented. The complexity of decisions regarding interacting timber harvesting systems are discussed with regard to simulation analysis techniques. Typical highly mechanized logging system operations are presented and the design objectives of a harvesting simulator are discussed.

Data collection and analysis techniques are presented for each harvesting function to be included in the simulation. Results from the analysis of each function are discussed regarding applicability to simulation and harvesting operational logic.

Simulation output is presented and discussed as a base for further analyses. Capabilities of simulation for use in equipment development and managerial planning are explored.
