The study will be based around the Appalachian Interstate System and its relationship to people, primarily through the lens of trucks and truck parking. By understanding the site at a regional scale, a local scale, and a site scale, a simple architecture can be developed to impact Appalachia and the conditions studied. This information is used to develop a simple and versatile modular system that can be easily placed across Appalachia as an occupiable human infrastructure for these large vehicles. It connects a hollowed-out economic necessity with community and human need.en
Truck driving is one of the more underserved areas of American labor currently. A job that requires laborers to operate vehicles for long periods of time, across stretches of country that do not have adequate amenities for the job. The transient nature of the profession makes the spaces for stopping vital for truckers' health and well-being, but the transience in the profession has invited neglect into those spaces. An infrastructure of place needs to be created to address the lack of sleep, lack of healthy food, and mental pitfalls that have degraded the labor. This thesis will focus on the synthesis of transient occupation and the place necessary for recuperation. By addressing the needs of the truckers, the transience can be grounded in a local/global ecosystem that rewards those on the move and those who are more stationary.en
