dc.description.abstract | Architecture constantly plays with the tectonics of form through competing forces from the structure and the façade. In the English language we define façade as a false front, whereas façade in architectural language defines the barrier between the outside and the inside. Often the façade blurs the line of truth behind the structure, creating a mask for it. This project explores the direct use of the structure to define the form and the facade through the wrapping of structure, allowing the structure to speak for the form of the building with no interruption. With this continuity between structure and façade, the occupancy of the building becomes highlighted through shadow, allowing expression of internal use to the outside. | en |
dc.description.abstractgeneral | Buildings often create a barrier from the inside to the outside. This barrier defines the building and provides many benefits such as climate control, a quiet place to live or work, and a greater footprint of usable space than before. Yet, this barrier creates a separation from the outside world, not letting people know whether anything is happening inside. What if Structures Could Speak looks at using the structure to define this barrier through a membrane wrapping and lighting to give clues to the occupancy of buildings and their structures. | en |
