Abstract
Public spaces play an important role in establishing social interaction, engagement among people from different cultures, and improving public health in cities. As cities become more dense and diverse, the demand for well-being public spaces that maintain intergenerational connection, cultural engagement, and physical and mental activity becomes increasingly important. This thesis demonstrates the role of public space in bridging generations, cultural identity, and a healthy lifestyle in urban design, using the Tysons area in Virginia as a study of converting a suburban edge city into a transit-oriented, commuter-friendly urban center. Though Tysons is transforming from a vehicle-dominated area to a mixed-use, walkable condition, this report also explores how parks, public plazas, and urban landscapes develop social connection, cultural expression, and active lifestyles. This study also illustrates the complexity of movement and connectivity. This research further explores challenges related to accessibility and connection. The identified points show how inclusive and well-developed public space planning can improve social identity and quality of life, contributing to healthier and more lively urban communities.
