- Anisotropic RANS Turbulence Modeling for Wakes in an Active Ocean EnvironmentWall, Dylan; Paterson, Eric G. (MDPI, 2020-12-18)The problem of simulating wakes in a stratified oceanic environment with active background turbulence is considered. Anisotropic RANS turbulence models are tested against laboratory and eddy-resolving models of the problem. An important aspect of our work is to acknowledge that the environment is not quiescent; therefore, additional sources are included in the models to provide a non-zero background turbulence. The RANS models are found to reproduce some key features from the eddy-resolving and laboratory descriptions of the problem. Tests using the freestream sources show the intuitive result that background turbulence causes more rapid wake growth and decay.
- Corrosion Fatigue Characteristics of 316L Stainless Steel Fabricated by Laser Powder Bed FusionGnanasekaran, Balachander; Song, Jie; Vasudevan, Vijay; Fu, Yao (MDPI, 2021-06-29)Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) has been increasingly used in the fabrication of dense metallic structures. However, the corrosion related properties of LPBF alloys, in particular environment-assisted cracking, such as corrosion fatigue properties, are not well understood. In this study, the corrosion and corrosion fatigue characteristics of LPBF 316L stainless steels (SS) in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution have been investigated using an electrochemical method, high cycle fatigue, and fatigue crack propagation testing. The LPBF 316L SSs demonstrated significantly improved corrosion properties compared to conventionally manufactured 316L, as reflected by the increased pitting and repassivation potentials, as well as retarded crack initiation. However, the printing parameters did not strongly affect the pitting potentials. LPBF samples also demonstrated enhanced capabilities of repassivation during the fatigue crack propagation. The unique microstructural features introduced during the printing process are discussed. The improved corrosion and corrosion fatigue properties are attributed to the presence of columnar/cellular subgrains formed by dislocation networks that serve as high diffusion paths to transport anti-corrosion elements.
- A Coupled OpenFOAM-WRF Study on Atmosphere-Wake-Ocean InteractionGilbert, John; Pitt, Jonathan (MDPI, 2020-12-30)This work aims to better understand how small scale disturbances that are generated at the air-sea interface propagate into the surrounding atmosphere under realistic environmental conditions. To that end, a one-way coupled atmosphere-ocean model is presented, in which predictions of sea surface currents and sea surface temperatures from a microscale ocean model are used as constant boundary conditions in a larger atmospheric model. The coupled model consists of an ocean component implemented while using the open source CFD software OpenFOAM, an atmospheric component solved using the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model, and a Python-based utility foamToWRF, which is responsible for mapping field data between the ocean and atmospheric domains. The results are presented for two demonstration cases, which indicate that the proposed coupled model is able to capture the propagation of small scale sea surface disturbances in the atmosphere, although a more thorough study is required in order to properly validate the model.
- Daily Variability in the Terrestrial UV AirglowImmel, Thomas J.; Eastes, Richard W.; McClintock, William E.; Mende, Steven B.; Frey, Harald U.; Triplett, Colin C.; England, Scott L. (MDPI, 2020-09-30)New capability for observing conditions in the upper atmosphere comes with the implementation of global ultraviolet (UV) imaging from geosynchronous orbit. Observed by the NASA GOLD mission, the emissions of atomic oxygen (OI) and molecular nitrogen (N2) in the 133–168-nm range can be used to characterize the behavior of these major constituents of the thermosphere. Observations in the ultraviolet from the first 200 days of 2019 indicate that the oxygen emission at 135.6 nm varies much differently than the broader Lyman-Birge-Hopfield (LBH) emission of N2. This is determined from monitoring the average instrument response from two roughly 1000 km2 areas, well separated from one another, at the same time of each day. Variations in the GOLD response to UV emissions in the monitored regions are determined, both in absolute terms and relative to a running 7-day average of GOLD measurements. We find that variations in N2 emissions in the two separate regions are significantly correlated, while oxygen emissions, observed in the same fixed geographic regions at the same universal time each day, exhibit a much lower correlation, and exhibit no correlation with the N2 emissions in the same regions. This indicates that oxygen densities in the airglow-originating altitude range of 150–200 km vary independently from the variations in nitrogen, which are so well correlated across the dayside to suggest a direct connection to variation in solar extreme-UV flux. The relation of the atomic oxygen variations to solar and geomagnetic activity is also shown to be low, suggesting the existence of a regional source that modifies the production of atomic oxygen in the thermosphere.
- Dynamic Analysis and Design Optimization of a Drag-Based Vibratory SwimmerTahmasian, Sevak; Jafaryzad, Arsam; Bulzoni, Nicolas L.; Staples, Anne E. (MDPI, 2020-03-22)Many organisms achieve locomotion via reciprocal motions. This paper presents the dynamic analysis and design optimization of a vibratory swimmer with asymmetric drag forces and fluid added mass. The swimmer consists of a floating body with an oscillatory mass inside. One-dimensional oscillations of the mass cause the body to oscillate with the same frequency as the mass. An asymmetric rigid fin attached to the bottom of the body generates asymmetric hydrodynamic forces, which drive the swimmer either backward or forward on average, depending on the orientation of the fin. The equation of motion of the system is a time-periodic, piecewise-smooth differential equation. We use simulations to determine the hydrodynamic forces acting on the fin and averaging techniques to determine the dynamic response of the swimmer. The analytical results are found to be in good agreement with vibratory swimmer prototype experiments. We found that the average unidirectional speed of the swimmer is optimized if the ratio of the forward and backward drag coefficients is minimized. The analysis presented here can aid in the design and optimization of bio-inspired and biomimetic robotic swimmers. A magnetically controlled microscale vibratory swimmer like the one described here could have applications in targeted drug delivery.
- Experimental Study of Pressure and Velocity Fluctuations Induced by Cavitation in a Small Venturi ChannelZhang, Linrong; Zhang, Guangjian; Ge, Mingming; Coutier-Delgosha, Olivier (MDPI, 2020-12-08)The purpose of this paper is to investigate experimentally the influence of the cavitation extent on the pressure and velocity fluctuations in a small convergent–divergent channel. The mean cavity length is determined from high-speed photography images. The mean pressure and the intensity of the pressure fluctuations are obtained from the transient pressure signals recorded by two pressure transducers at the inlet and outlet of the test section. The statistical turbulence quantities are derived from the instantaneous velocity fields measured by the laser-induced fluorescent particle image velocimetry (PIV-LIF) technique. The experimental results show that the decrease of the cavitation number (the increase in the extent of cavitation) leads to a rise in the turbulent fluctuations in the wake region due to the impact of vapour clouds collapsing, while the presence of a vapour phase is found to reduce the streamwise and cross-stream velocity fluctuations in the attached cavity. It might be attributed to two mechanisms: the presence of a vapour phase modifies the vortex-stretching process, and the cavitation compressibility damps out the turbulent fluctuations. Similar effects of cavitation are also observed in the pressure fluctuations.
- Hybrid RANS/LES Turbulence Model Applied to a Transitional Unsteady Boundary Layer on Wind Turbine AirfoilZhang, Di; Cadel, Daniel R.; Paterson, Eric G.; Lowe, K. Todd (MDPI, 2019-07-11)A hybrid Reynolds-averaged Navier Stokes/large-eddy simulation (RANS/LES) turbulence model integrated with a transition formulation is developed and tested on a surrogate model problem through a joint experimental and computational fluid dynamic approach. The model problem consists of a circular cylinder for generating coherent unsteadiness and a downstream airfoil in the cylinder wake. The cylinder flow is subcritical, with a Reynolds number of 64,000 based upon the cylinder diameter. The quantitative dynamics of vortex shedding and Reynolds stresses in the cylinder near wake are well captured, owing to the turbulence-resolving large eddy simulation mode that was activated in the wake. The hybrid model switched between RANS and LES modes outside the boundary layers, as expected. According to the experimental and simulation results, the airfoil encountered local flow angle variations up to ±50°. Further analysis through a phase-averaging technique found phase lags in the airfoil boundary layer along the chordwise locations, and both the phase-averaged and mean velocity profiles collapsed into the Law-of-the-wall in the range of 0 < y + < 50 . The features of high blade-loading fluctuations due to unsteadiness and transitional boundary layers are of interest in the aerodynamic studies of full-scale wind turbine blades, making the current model problem a comprehensive benchmark case for future model development and validation.
- Increase in Stability of an X-Configured AUV through Hydrodynamic Design Iterations with the Definition of a New Stability Index to Include Effect of GravityMiller, Lakshmi; Brizzolara, Stefano; Stilwell, Daniel J. (MDPI, 2021-08-30)A study about the effect of different configurations of stationary and movable appendages on the dynamic stability of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is presented. A new stability index that can be used to assess dynamic stability in the vertical plane is derived. It improves upon the vertical plane stability index by accurately accounting for the contribution of hydrostatic forces to dynamic stability, even at low speeds. The use of the new stability index is illustrated by applying it to a set of AUV configurations based on an AUV initially designed at Virginia Tech and built by Dive Technologies. The applicability of this index depends on the speed of the craft. The range of applicability in terms of speed is presented for the DIVE craft as an example. The baseline design of the DIVE craft has asymmetry in the vertical plane and symmetry in the horizontal plane. A virtual planar motion mechanism (VPMM) is used to obtain the hydrodynamic coefficients of the hull. Design iterations are performed on the baseline design by varying the appendages in shape and size, adding appendages and adding features on appendages. The best and the baseline design from this effort are incorporated in a 6 DOF lumped-parameter model (LPM) to compare results of a straight line maneuver. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) tool is used to obtain the trajectory comparison of turn-circle maneuver for these two designs. A principal conclusion is the important contribution of a hydrostatic restoring force at low-moderate speeds by using GVgrav and the influence of design of control surfaces, both stationary and non-stationary, in the achievement of control-fixed course stability.
- Influence of Propulsion Type on the Stratified Near Wake of an Axisymmetric Self-Propelled BodyJones, Matthew C.; Paterson, Eric G. (MDPI, 2018-05-01)To better understand the influence of swirl on the thermally-stratified near wake of a self-propelled axisymmetric vehicle, three propulsor schemes were considered: a single propeller, contra-rotating propellers (CRP), and a zero-swirl, uniform-velocity jet. The propellers were modeled using an Actuator-Line model in an unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes simulation, where the Reynolds number is R e L = 3.1 × 10 8 using the freestream velocity and body length. The authors previously showed good comparison to experimental data with this approach. Visualization of vortical structures shows the helical paths of blade-tip vortices from the single propeller as well as the complicated vortical interaction between contra-rotating blades. Comparison of instantaneous and time-averaged fields shows that temporally stationary fields emerge by half of a body length downstream. Circumferentially-averaged axial velocity profiles show similarities between the single propeller and CRP in contrast to the jet configuration. Swirl velocity of the CRP, however, was attenuated in comparison to that of the single propeller case. Mixed-patch contour maps illustrate the unique temperature distribution of each configuration as a consequence of their respective swirl profiles. Finally, kinetic and potential energy is integrated along downstream axial planes to reveal key differences between the configurations. The CRP configuration creates less potential energy by reducing swirl that would otherwise persist in the near wake of a single-propeller wake.

III; Schuyler, Travis J.; Shankar, Ajay; Smith, Suzanne W.; Waugh, Sean; Dixon, Cory; Borenstein, Steve; de Boer, Gijs (MDPI, 2019-05-10)Small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) are rapidly transforming atmospheric research. With the advancement of the development and application of these systems, improving knowledge of best practices for accurate measurement is critical for achieving scientific goals. We present results from an intercomparison of atmospheric measurement data from the Lower Atmospheric Process Studies at Elevation—a Remotely piloted Aircraft Team Experiment (LAPSE-RATE) field campaign. We evaluate a total of 38 individual sUAS with 23 unique sensor and platform configurations using a meteorological tower for reference measurements. We assess precision, bias, and time response of sUAS measurements of temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed, and wind direction. Most sUAS measurements show broad agreement with the reference, particularly temperature and wind speed, with mean value differences of 1.6 ± 2.6 ∘ C and 0.22 ± 0.59 m/s for all sUAS, respectively. sUAS platform and sensor configurations were found to contribute significantly to measurement accuracy. Sensor configurations, which included proper aspiration and radiation shielding of sensors, were found to provide the most accurate thermodynamic measurements (temperature and relative humidity), whereas sonic anemometers on multirotor platforms provided the most accurate wind measurements (horizontal speed and direction). We contribute both a characterization and assessment of sUAS for measuring atmospheric parameters, and identify important challenges and opportunities for improving scientific measurements with sUAS.
- Lagrangian Reduced Order Modeling Using Finite Time Lyapunov ExponentsXie, Xuping; Nolan, Peter J.; Ross, Shane D.; Mou, Changhong; Iliescu, Traian (MDPI, 2020-10-23)There are two main strategies for improving the projection-based reduced order model (ROM) accuracy—(i) improving the ROM, that is, adding new terms to the standard ROM; and (ii) improving the ROM basis, that is, constructing ROM bases that yield more accurate ROMs. In this paper, we use the latter. We propose two new Lagrangian inner products that we use together with Eulerian and Lagrangian data to construct two new Lagrangian ROMs, which we denote α-ROM and λ-ROM. We show that both Lagrangian ROMs are more accurate than the standard Eulerian ROMs, that is, ROMs that use standard Eulerian inner product and data to construct the ROM basis. Specifically, for the quasi-geostrophic equations, we show that the new Lagrangian ROMs are more accurate than the standard Eulerian ROMs in approximating not only Lagrangian fields (e.g., the finite time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE)), but also Eulerian fields (e.g., the streamfunction). In particular, the α-ROM can be orders of magnitude more accurate than the standard Eulerian ROMs. We emphasize that the new Lagrangian ROMs do not employ any closure modeling to model the effect of discarded modes (which is standard procedure for low-dimensional ROMs of complex nonlinear systems). Thus, the dramatic increase in the new Lagrangian ROMs’ accuracy is entirely due to the novel Lagrangian inner products used to build the Lagrangian ROM basis.
- Laser Displacement Sensors for Wind Tunnel Model Position MeasurementsKuester, Matthew; Intaratep, Nanyaporn; Borgoltz, Aurelien (MDPI, 2018-11-22)Wind tunnel measurements of two-dimensional wing sections, or airfoils, are the building block of aerodynamic predictions for many aerodynamic applications. In these experiments, the forces and pitching moment on the airfoil are measured as a function of the orientation of the airfoil relative to the incoming airflow. Small changes in this angle (called the angle of attack, or α ) can create significant changes in the forces and moments, so accurately measuring the angle of attack is critical in these experiments. This work describes the implementation of laser displacement sensors in a wind tunnel; the sensors measured the distance between the wind tunnel walls and the airfoil, which was then used to calculate the model position. The uncertainty in the measured laser distances, based on the sensor resolution and temperature drift, is comparable to the uncertainty in traditional linear encoder measurements. Distances from multiple sensors showed small, but statistically significant, amounts of model deflection and rotation that would otherwise not have been detected, allowing for an improved angle of attack measurement.
- Lightweight Chassis Design of Hybrid Trucks Considering Multiple Road Conditions and ConstraintsDe, Shuvodeep; Singh, Karanpreet; Seo, Junhyeon; Kapania, Rakesh K.; Ostergaard, Erik; Angelini, Nicholas; Aguero, Raymond (MDPI, 2020-12-28)The paper describes a fully automated process to generate a shell-based finite element model of a large hybrid truck chassis to perform mass optimization considering multiple load cases and multiple constraints. A truck chassis consists of different parts that could be optimized using shape and size optimization. The cross members are represented by beams, and other components of the truck (batteries, engine, fuel tanks, etc.) are represented by appropriate point masses and are attached to the rail using multiple point constraints to create a mathematical model. Medium-fidelity finite element models are developed for front and rear suspensions and they are attached to the chassis using multiple point constraints, hence creating the finite element model of the complete truck. In the optimization problem, a set of five load conditions, each of which corresponds to a road event, is considered, and constraints are imposed on maximum allowable von Mises stress and the first vertical bending frequency. The structure is optimized by implementing the particle swarm optimization algorithm using parallel processing. A mass reduction of about 13.25% with respect to the baseline model is achieved.
- Multi-Physics Modeling of Electrochemical DepositionKauffman, Justin; Gilbert, John; Paterson, Eric G. (MDPI, 2020-12-11)Electrochemical deposition (ECD) is a common method used in the field of microelectronics to grow metallic coatings on an electrode. The deposition process occurs in an electrolyte bath where dissolved ions of the depositing material are suspended in an acid while an electric current is applied to the electrodes. The proposed computational model uses the finite volume method and the finite area method to predict copper growth on the plating surface without the use of a level set method or deforming mesh because the amount of copper layer growth is not expected to impact the fluid motion. The finite area method enables the solver to track the growth of the copper layer and uses the current density as a forcing function for an electric potential field on the plating surface. The current density at the electrolyte-plating surface interface is converged within each PISO (Pressure Implicit with Splitting Operator) loop iteration and incorporates the variance of the electrical resistance that occurs via the growth of the copper layer. This paper demonstrates the application of the finite area method for an ECD problem and additionally incorporates coupling between fluid mechanics, ionic diffusion, and electrochemistry.
- Multi-Scale Localized Perturbation Method in OpenFOAMHiggins, Erik; Pitt, Jonathan; Paterson, Eric G. (MDPI, 2020-12-19)A modified set of governing differential equations for geophysical fluid flows is derived. All of the simulation fields are decomposed into a nominal large-scale background state and a small-scale perturbation from this background, and the new system is closed by the assumption that the perturbation is one-way coupled to the background. The decomposition method, termed the multi-scale localized perturbation method (MSLPM), is then applied to the governing equations of stratified fluid flows, implemented in OpenFOAM, and exercised in order to simulate the interaction of a vertically-varying background shear flow with an axisymmetric perturbation in a turbulent ocean environment. The results demonstrate that the MSLPM can be useful in visualizing the evolution of a perturbation within a complex background while retaining the complex physics that are associated with the original governing equations. The simulation setup may also be simplified under the MSLPM framework. Further applications of the MSLPM, especially to multi-scale simulations that encompass a large range of spatial and temporal scales, may be beneficial for researchers.
- Pollution Transport Patterns Obtained Through Generalized Lagrangian Coherent StructuresNolan, Peter J.; Foroutan, Hosein; Ross, Shane D. (MDPI, 2020-02-06)Identifying atmospheric transport pathways is important to understand the effects of pollutants on weather, climate, and human health. The atmospheric wind field is variable in space and time and contains complex patterns due to turbulent mixing. In such a highly unsteady flow field, it can be challenging to predict material transport over a finite-time interval. Particle trajectories are often used to study how pollutants evolve in the atmosphere. Nevertheless, individual trajectories are sensitive to their initial conditions. Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCSs) have been shown to form the template of fluid parcel motion in a fluid flow. LCSs can be characterized by special material surfaces that organize the parcel motion into ordered patterns. These key material surfaces form the core of fluid deformation patterns, such as saddle points, tangles, filaments, barriers, and pathways. Traditionally, the study of LCSs has looked at coherent structures derived from integrating the wind velocity field. It has been assumed that particles in the atmosphere will generally evolve with the wind. Recent work has begun to look at the motion of chemical species, such as water vapor, within atmospheric flows. By calculating the flux associated with each species, a new effective flux-based velocity field can be obtained for each species. This work analyzes generalized species-weighted coherent structures associated with various chemical species to find their patterns and pathways in the atmosphere, providing a new tool and language for the assessment of pollutant transport and patterns.
- Scaling Law for Photon Transmission through Optically Turbid Slabs Based on Random Walk TheoryLi, Xuesong; Ma, Lin (MDPI, 2012-03-01)Past work has demonstrated the value of a random walk theory (RWT) to solve multiple-scattering problems arising in numerous contexts. This paper's goal is to investigate the application range of the RWT using Monte Carlo simulations and extending it to anisotropic media using scaling laws. Meanwhile, this paper also reiterates rules for converting RWT formulas to real physical dimensions, and corrects some errors which appear in an earlier publication. The RWT theory, validated by the Monte Carlo simulations and combined with the scaling law, is expected to be useful to study multiple scattering and to greatly reduce the computation cost.
- Wind Dispersal of Natural and Biomimetic Maple SamarasNave, Gary K.; Hall, Nathaniel; Somers, Katrina; Davis, Brock; Gruszewski, Hope A.; Powers, Craig W.; Collver, Michael; Schmale, David G. (MDPI, 2021-03-29)Maple trees (genus Acer) accomplish the task of distributing objects to a wide area by producing seeds, known as samaras, which are carried by the wind as they autorotate and slowly descend to the ground. With the goal of supporting engineering applications, such as gathering environmental data over a broad area, we developed 3D-printed artificial samaras. Here, we compare the behavior of both natural and artificial samaras in both still-air laboratory experiments and wind dispersal experiments in the field. We show that the artificial samaras are able to replicate (within one standard deviation) the behavior of natural samaras in a lab setting. We further use the notion of windage to compare dispersal behavior, and show that the natural samara has the highest mean windage, corresponding to the longest flights during both high wind and low wind experimental trials. This study demonstrated a bioinspired design for the dispersed deployment of sensors and provides a better understanding of wind-dispersal of both natural and artificial samaras.
- Wind Profiling in the Lower Atmosphere from Wind-Induced Perturbations to Multirotor UASGonzález-Rocha, Javier; De Wekker, Stephan F. J.; Ross, Shane D.; Woolsey, Craig A. (MDPI, 2020-02-29)We present a model-based approach to estimate the vertical profile of horizontal wind velocity components using motion perturbations of a multirotor unmanned aircraft system (UAS) in both hovering and steady ascending flight. The state estimation framework employed for wind estimation was adapted to a set of closed-loop rigid body models identified for an off-the-shelf quadrotor. The quadrotor models used for wind estimation were characterized for hovering and steady ascending flight conditions ranging between 0 and 2 m/s. The closed-loop models were obtained using system identification algorithms to determine model structures and estimate model parameters. The wind measurement method was validated experimentally above the Virginia Tech Kentland Experimental Aircraft Systems Laboratory by comparing quadrotor and independent sensor measurements from a sonic anemometer and two SoDAR instruments. Comparison results demonstrated quadrotor wind estimation in close agreement with the independent wind velocity measurements. However, horizontal wind velocity profiles were difficult to validate using time-synchronized SoDAR measurements. Analysis of the noise intensity and signal-to-noise ratio of the SoDARs proved that close-proximity quadrotor operations can corrupt wind measurement from SoDARs, which has not previously been reported.
